Sydney Aiello, friend of United States school massacre victim, kills herself

Parkland

A recent graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who survived the Parkland school shooting has died by suicide, the student's mother told CBS Miami.

Her mother told a CNN affiliate that her daughter suffered from survivor's guilt after the Parkland school shooting and had recently been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Family members told media outlets that Aiello was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and suffered from survivor's guilt after the massacre at her high school on February 14, 2018, left 17 people dead.

Suspect Nikolas Cruz, who police say confessed to the killings, faces first-degree murder and attempted murder charges.

It was the second death of a Parkland survivor in about a week.

News of the student's death comes on the first anniversary of the March for Our Lives, the massive student-led demonstration against gun violence that was held in Washington and several other US cities.

The student's name has not been released but Coral Springs police spokesman Tyler Reik said it was a sophomore boy.

While police haven't officially disclosed the student's sex, "we did confirm the student was a current student enrolled at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School", he says.

It's been a little over a year since the massacre at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School. One of her friends, Meadow Pollack, was killed in the shooting.

People still affected by the shooting can seek counseling through the Broward County Resiliency Center at Pine Trails Park in Parkland, not far from the Stoneman Douglas campus.

This latest blow to the community comes just one day after 19-year-old Sydney Aiello's death was announced.

A GoFundMe page in honor Sydney, started by family friends, has raised $30,000 in donations for her family.
