Katko joins failed bid to override Trump veto on border emergency

US Senate Republican wants a special counsel to investigate Trump probe

The House on Tuesday failed to override President Donald Trump's veto of a resolution that would have terminated his declaration of a national emergency at the southern USA border, leaving the matter to federal courts where several lawsuits challenging the decision have been filed.

The Democratic-led House needs roughly 290 votes, two-thirds, to override the veto, which would require many more Republicans to join Democrats to oppose the president than when the chamber first passed the resolution, which was by a simple majority.

While clearly a defeat for Democrats, the vote afforded them a chance to reemphasize policy differences with Trump and change the subject from collusion allegations that have lost political clout. Her office didn't respond to a request for comment. A coalition of 16 states sued in February to block Trump's move.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Tuesday Congress will work through funding process to counter Trump's action on national emergency and border wall. The wall funding dispute led to a shutdown of about a quarter of the federal government starting on December 21. Border Patrol agents apprehended almost double the illegal border crossers in the first five months of fiscal 2019 than in the same period the prior year.

"Whether we can succeed with the number of votes is not the point", Pelosi said at an event in NY.

Katko warned that Trump would set a risky precedent by diverting $6.7 billion from the military and other programs to finance the border wall.

Trump wants to use his emergency order to redirect about $3.6 billion budgeted for military construction projects. Senate Democrats immediately protested the transfer.

Journey home begins for Christchurch's foreign victims
Aly told The Project audiences seeing the memorial erected for the Christchurch terror attack victims was "almost life changing". The relatives of another two Indian victims opted to have their loved ones buried in New Zealand, a consulate spokesman said.

In floor debate ahead of the vote Tuesday, Democrats insisted Trump was violating the Constitution's separation of powers, while Republicans argued he was acting within his authority under the National Emergencies Act to address a genuine crisis at the southern border.

House Democrats, meanwhile, were quick to announce they would hold an override vote on March 26.

We all swore to protect our nation, and that begins with making sure that no one, including the President of the United States, is acting above the law.

While Trump's declaration has now been upheld in Congress, it still faces legal challenges with more than a half-dozen lawsuits countering his move to circumvent Congress to construct the border wall. "The president's declaration is only necessary because Congress can't reach a deal to secure our country". "The president is using the authority Congress has given him", said Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.).

President Donald Trump says the outcome of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian election interference "could not have been better".

Trump's declaration was the 60th presidential emergency under that statute, but the first aimed at spending that Congress explicitly denied, according to New York University's Brennan Center for Justice, which tracks the law.

Fifty-three percent said "Trump tried to stop investigations into Russian influence on his administration", down 2 points from last week.
