UK government defiant as Parliament takes control of Brexit

Britain’s May seeks third Brexit vote Friday

"We have worked assiduously with the Government to try to get changes to the agreement and will continue to do so, but we will not vote for an unamended or unchanged version".

This story is developing...

Tabled by Colchester MP Will Quince and backed by 81 MPs drawn largely from the Leave wing of the Conservative Party and the DUP - but also including Labour's Graham Stringer, Kate Hoey, Gareth Snell and Ronnie Campbell - this amendment states that Parliament gave the decision on European Union membership to the British people in the 2016 referendum and that its result should be honoured.

The government, which usually controls the scheduling of votes in Parliament, said the lawmakers' move "upends the balance between our democratic institutions and sets a risky, unpredictable precedent for the future".

Alistair Burt, who quit his British Foreign Office role in order to vote for the Commons amendment, said: "Parliament should seek urgently to resolve the situation by considering alternatives freely, without the instruction of party whips, and Government should adopt any feasible outcome as its own in order to progress matters".

Rumors are swirling that May could announce her departure date in the hopes of winning over skeptical Brexiteers who would prefer another prime minister to lead the next phrase of Brexit talks.

Anxious at the deepening political crisis in London, EU leaders last week agreed to postpone Brexit to avoid a potentially catastrophic "no deal" divorce on March 29, when 46 years of ties were formally scheduled to end.

In spite of the turnaround, May still lacks the numbers needed for her deal to pass.

United Kingdom lawmakers have made a decision to take the Brexit process out of PM Theresa May's hands, voting to accept an amendment that would break the ongoing parliamentary deadlock by changing the rules. Corbyn is expected to face a leadership challenge, but says he won't resign despite a vote of no confidence from his party's lawmakers.

Record Audiences Get Set to Make the 2017 Grand National the Biggest To Date
For some , it will be a case of asking which horses have been at their most impressive this season that will give them the clues as to which Grand National horses to bet on .

It means MPs will now stage a series of "indicative votes" on alternatives to the Prime Minister's Brexit deal on Wednesday.

Lawmakers scheduled a series of "indicative votes" for Wednesday evening, created to assess which way Paliament wants to go and whether there's a Brexit Plan B or C or D that could command a majority. But the U-turns from Tories Mr Rees-Mogg, Michael Fabricant and James Gray may prove too late, with some of their hardcore Brexiteer colleagues including Mark Francois and the DUP still refusing to vote for the deal before Friday.

Labour's Steve Reed tweeted: "Humiliation for May as she admits there's no majority for her useless Brexit deal".

If they defeat it, Britain has until April 12 to tell the European Union what it plans to do next: leave without a deal, risking economic chaos, or seek a long delay to Brexit and chart a course toward a softer exit or even remaining in the bloc.

European Council President Donald Tusk said last week that all Brexit options were still open for Britain until April 12, including a deal, a departure with no deal, a long extension - or even revoking Article 50 and remaining in the EU.

"What a disgrace - because if our votes don't count, then, frankly, we may as well just go home".

It was thought the paper would be pink, the colour used for deferred votes in the Commons, but clerks are considering changing to a different colour to mark the historic process.

Tory ministers are reportedly sizing up alternatives to May - with the leading contenders being Michael Gove and David Lidington, while Boris also attempts to push his own ambition.

May's deal was defeated by 149 votes on March 12 and by 230 votes on January 15.
