Prosecutors Drop Charges Against "Empire" Actor Jussie Smollett

Smollett's lawyers want focus put on brothers' role in 'attack'

There is another freakish twist in the Jussie Smollett case as the actor's attorney claims the two Nigerian brothers, who said they were paid by the actor to attack him, may have been dressed in white face.

Glandian admitted though that Smollett did tell police his attacker had white or pale skin.

In dropping the charges, Joe Magats, first assistant state's attorney in Cook County, told The Washington Post that his office took into account Smollett's lack of a violent criminal background and the "facts and circumstances of the case".

The "Empire" actor was told earlier this week he wouldn't be charged over allegations he orchestrated a racist and homophobic attack on himself in January.

President Donald Trump has weighed in on the Jussie Smollett saga, calling prosecutors' decision to drop all charges against the Empire star "an embarrassment to our Nation".

Jussie Smollett's legal team is demanding an apology on the actor's behalf from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson for "for dragging an innocent man's character through the mud".

"Do I think justice was served?"

Emanuel has said numerous times that the $10,000 bond Smollett forfeited isn't in the same ballpark as what Chicago spent on the investigation.

Michael Avenatti under arrest, charged with extortion, prosecutors say
In the federal complaint against Avenatti, it notes that he was scheduled to meet with the attorney for the company on Monday. Prosecutors say he used the money in the intervening months to pay expenses for his coffee business and personal use.

Foxx did recuse herself from the case.

" "Empire" Writers Taunt Smollett Critics, Slam Chicago Journalists: 'You Reported a Bunch of False Information, ' " read one Mediaite headline. "It's Mr. Smollett who committed this hoax, period..."

Following the decision to drop the charges - and seal the records - the controversial actor claimed he had been "truthful and consistent" from the beginning and said the state had done "what's right" for the case.

She also insisted no one tried to intervene on Smollett's behalf, despite emails showing that Foxx was contacted by people linked to Smollett about the case. An attorney who has represented the brothers, Gloria Schmidt, said that the pair did not testify as part of any plea deal and that they were not granted any immunity from prosecution.

Jussie Smollett leaves a Chicago courthouse Tuesday after the charges were dropped against him. "There was no political influence in this case", she said.

The city of Chicago sent a letter to Jussie Smollett on Thursday demanding the actor pay $130,000 to the city to offset the costs associated with investigating the alleged hate crime hoax he is accused of concocting.

Prosecutors dropped the charges on Tuesday, saying they stood by the accusation but that an agreement by Smollett to forfeit his $10,000 bond USA was a just outcome.

Throughout all this, Smollett has maintained his innocence. "This is a whitewash of justice".
