John Oliver slams Vince McMahon and the WWE in a scathing segment

John Oliver

During the piece, Oliver brought up a story CM Punk told on that infamous episode of Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling Podcast in which the former-WWE Champion defecated in his trunks during a match with Dean Ambrose from December of 2013.

During the March 31 episode of Last Week Tonight, John criticized WWE's Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, 73, for "shield [ing] himself from responsibility for his wrestlers' welfare" through shady business practices.

The focus of Oliver's criticism was the alarming rate of early deaths among wrestlers, but he also lashed out at WWE for categorizing performers as independent contractors, the company's poor healthcare services and even for swallowing up the old territory system to create a virtual monopoly.

"WWE issued the following statement in response to the" Last Week Tonight" feature that aired on Sunday night on HBO.

"McMahon plays an a-hole on TV, but is also an a-hole in real life", the HBO host said, accusing the WWE of being worse than the National Football League of taking care of former athletes.

With WrestleMania just six days away, all eyes are on the WWE as they broadcast the Show of Shows in-front of 80,000 people at Metlife Stadium and millions more watching around the world.

He played many clips from retired wrestlers who have worked under McMahon.

John Oliver's segment against WWE was too big for the company to ignore.

John Oliver did note that the WWE has implemented some changes over the past few years, like banning chair shots to the head and adopting a concussion protocol, but argued that these "underwhelming" steps aren't enough. This designation, as Oliver pointed out, means the wrestlers don't qualify for annual paid leave, pensions or health insurance. "I'm not saying the fans should do that, or make signs, or make lots of signs", Oliver said, "I'm just saying I really hope they make their voices heard on this".

"Because given that Business Hulk here", referring to Vince McMahon, "is a billionaire on the broken backs of his non-employees, the very least he could do is show the same dedication to wrestlers that they have shown to his company".
