'Smallville's Allison Mack Pleads Guilty in Sex Cult Case

A sobbing Allison Mack changed her tune and pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy, and one count of racketeering (including extortion and forced labor) for her alleged time running a master-slave ring within the NXIVM cult.

John Marzulli, Public Information Officer for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of NY confirmed Mack's plea, which was entered Monday.

According to prosecutors, Mack recruited women into NXIVM, a network of self-help programs based in Albany, N.Y. The recruits were told the group would help with women's empowerment.

With jury selection beginning at the federal case against a cult-like upstate NY group, TV actress Allison Mack pleaded guilty Monday to charges she manipulated women into becoming sex slaves for the group's spiritual leader.

Mack could be entering into a cooperation agreement.

"I know that I am and will be a better person because of this", she promised. Her sentencing was set for September 11. Mack's lawyers declined to provide any further details about her plea deal.

According to court documents, the secret society allegedly operated as a pyramid scheme, with levels of "slaves", headed by "masters"; slaves were then expected to recruit their own slaves, thus becoming masters themselves.

The women were allegedly forced to perform services under the threat of serious harm, adhere to strict diets of only 900 calories a day, and endure a ceremony in which Raniere's initials were branded into their skin with a hot cauterizing pen. If convicted of those charges, she would have faced life in prison.

Mack is accused of coercing two of her "slaves" into having sex with Raniere, for which she received financial benefits.

Raniere, who was arrested in March 2018, faces the same charges plus wire fraud and racketeering.

Potential jurors will be asked to fill out questionnaires Monday in federal court in Brooklyn. A fifth defendant, the Seagram liquor fortune heiress Clare Bronfman, likely will be the only one besides Raniere to go to trial, Bronfman's attorney Mark Geragos has said in court, CBS News reports. Several others involved in the case, including NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman and her daughter Lauren Salzman, have pleaded guilty for their roles in the group.
