BJP MLA among 5 killed in Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh BJP MLA among five killed in suspected Maoist attack on convoy

Naxals targetted the convoy of BJP MLA Bhima Mandavi at Nakulnar. Apart from Mandavi, five security personnel also lost their lives.

In a major naxal attack, outlaws on Tuesday executed an improvised explosive device (IED) blast killing BJP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Bheema Mandavi and four security personnel in insurgency-hit Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, police said. Initially, the BJP MLA was reported missing but P Sundar Raj, DIG, Anti-Naxal Operations, confirmed that Mandavi was killed in the attack.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, through a series of tweets said that this was an attack on "parliamentary democracy".

A crater is formed on the road after the convoy was attacked by Maoists in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on April 9, 2019.

As per reports five policemen have been killed in the attack.

Twenty-seven people, including senior Congress leader Mahendra Karma and former Union minister V C Shukla, were killed in the ambush. He had also been vocal in his criticism of the ruling Congress.

But they are most active in a forested belt of the country dubbed the "red corridor" and encompassing the states of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

This is the third attack by Naxals in the Batar region since the polls were announced on 10 March.

Before the assembly elections in November previous year, a CISF personnel and three civilians were killed in Dantewada when an improvised explosive device planted by Naxalites tore through a bus.

Three constituencies in Chhattisgarh will be going to polls in the first phase of the Lok Sabha Elections.

Only last week, naxals killed four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and two others in an encounter in Kanker district.
