London climate-change protesters vow to continue blockades

The road is blocked by demonstrators during a climate protest at Marble Arch in London Tuesday

The protests were organised by the campaign group Extinction Rebellion, which was established a year ago in Britain by academics and has become one of the world's fastest-growing environmental movements.

These form the activist group's International Rebellion campaign, which could entail up to two weeks of disruptive behaviour to pressure governments into taking action on climate change.

Environmental activists vowed to disrupt London underground train services in a third day of action on Wednesday in a bid to force the British government to take more radical measures to avert what they cast as an imminent global climate cataclysm.

Almost 150 protesters, some carrying signs reading "Tell the Truth" and "Non Violent", rallied against climate change at the intersection of Centre Street and Park Row between City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge around 10 a.m.

"It's certainly an option that tactics will be escalated if our demands are not met", she said.

On Thursday, the force said the demonstrations were proving such a drain on resources that police were having to release under investigation many of those arrested, even if that meant they simply returned to the protest sites, while Easter leave was being cancelled for officers who were being asked to work 12-hour shifts.

More than 60 people were arrested on Wednesday while blocking traffic during a climate change protest near City Hall in Lower Manhattan, according to authorities and sources.

"Will you come down to Parliament Square and talk with us?"

The people charged are Cathy Eastburn, 51, from Lambeth, south London; Mark Ovland, 35 of Somerton, Somerset; and Luke Watson, 29, of Manuden, Essex.

Some activists glued themselves to a train while others chained themselves to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's garden fence.

They have all been remanded in custody and are due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court later, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

An ice cream van has also moved in to take advantage of potential customers.

Commuters walking across the bridge, which is completely closed to traffic, were forced to weave between crowds of demonstrators.

Extinction Rebellion has blocked several locations in central London in recent days after it staged a semi-nude protest in parliament earlier this month.

The police have ordered the protesters to confine themselves to a zone within Marble Arch, a space at the junction of Hyde Park, the Oxford Street main shopping thoroughfare and the Park Lane street of plush hotels.
