Emma Thompson ‘so happy’ to join Extinction Rebellion protests in London

Police removed activists from Waterloo Bridge on Tuesday on the second day of environmental protests

Film star Emma Thompson joined climate change activists in central London on Friday to read poetry praising Earth's bounties, part of a series of protests which have caused transport snarl-ups in the British capital.

London police are calling in extra help and cancelling officers' holidays as they deal with rolling climate change protests that have caused transport headaches across the British capital.

The group wants the Government to declare a climate emergency and take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

Dame Emma left the protest before specialist officers arrived to remove people from the frame of the boat.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said he was "extremely concerned" about protesters' plans to disrupt the underground on Wednesday.

Extinction Rebellion Ireland member Ciarán O'Carroll said it is time for Ireland to become one of the worldwide leaders on climate change.

A Heathrow spokesman said: "We are working with the authorities to address any threat of protests which could disrupt the airport".

Arrests spiral at Extinction Rebellion occupations
The London protest is just one of 80 across the world in 33 different countries, according to organisers. If we don't do anything to change this, our children will die".

So far there have been more than 570 arrests in connection with the protests. "This allows us to free up significant numbers of officers whilst responding to local policing".

The police have ordered the protesters to confine themselves to a zone within Marble Arch, a space at the junction of Hyde Park, the Oxford Street main shopping thoroughfare and the Park Lane street of plush hotels.

"We are determined to keep the airport operating", he said.

"I expect the police to take a firm stance and use the full force of the law", Javid said.

After a briefing from Met Commissioner Cressida Dick, the Home Secretary said: "I totally condemn any protesters who are stepping outside the boundaries of the law".

Three protesters who disrupted a light railway system when they glued themselves to trains on Wednesday have been charged with public disorder offenses and appeared in court on Thursday.

Activists are camped out in tents at Parliament Square, and a boat surrounded by protesters is now blocking a major junction in Oxford Circus.
