Tesla dumps Nvidia, will use its own self-driving chips

Musk attends the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory groundbreaking ceremony in Shanghai

Musk has been the centre of most Tesla presentations, but on Monday he ceded the spotlight to his top hardware and software executives.

Elon Musk said he's "very confident" that Tesla will have autonomous robo-taxis on the road as soon as next year.

The company said during the presentation that the Full Self-Driving hardware offered 144 TOPS of processing power, and Tesla said in a tweet that it "houses 6 billion transistors and is capable of processing up to 2300 frames per second - a 21x improvement over previous gen hardware". This quarter, Tesla is expected to have a total of 500,000 cars on the road, from which the company collects driving data that is used to improve the predictability of Tesla's neural networks, helping steer the self-driving auto.

April 22 - Musk says that in 2020, Tesla will have "over a million cars with full self-driving, software, everything".

And once fully autonomous vehicles are introduced, there won't be any need for steering wheels or pedals, Musk believes.

"It is fundamentally insane to buy anything other than a Tesla", Musk said.

In places where there aren't enough shared Tesla cars, the company will have "dedicated Tesla vehicles", he added.

What Happened to John Singleton? Oscar-Nominated Director Reportedly Hospitalized Following Stroke
He is the co-creator and executive producer of the cocaine crime-drama Snowfall which was renewed past year for a third season. His other films include " Poetic Justice ", which starred Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur, and " Rosewood ".

While Nvidia might say that this doesn't compare to its billions of simulated hours, Musk says that simulated testing can not replicate real-world dilemmas.

Speaking at the 'Tesla Autonomy Day, ' Musk said that the autonomous taxi service will be introduced to select cities across the country and also said that the carmaker will make a auto with no steering wheel or pedals in "probably two years from now". There are also a lot of smart optimizations - including important energy efficiency optimizations - and other features of the chip design that are gone into in great detail in the full Tesla Autonomy Day presentation video.

Musk compared the Tesla Network to a combination between Uber and Airbnb.

Furthermore, owners will also be able to choose who can borrow their cars and limit their availability to specific times during the day. "[Autonomy] is basically our entire expense structure", Musk told an investor inquiring about where the California-based company was incurring the most cost.

While this service might seem like a far away concept, Musk assures investors that Tesla expects the service to launch by the end of 2020 barring regulatory difficulties. The comment that has stood out among Twitter users was when he essentially declared cars that aren't Teslas will be obsolete in three years, ultimately equating regular vehicles to horses-an old-timey mode of transportation.

Google's Waymo and General Motors' Cruise Automation are among the leaders in the self-driving space, and even with their sophistication and the thousands of hours their self-driving automobiles have clocked on the road, it is unsure if fully autonomous vehicles will see widespread use in the near future.

Both Consumer Reports and the Partners for Automated Vehicles Education (PAVE) have recently taken issue with Tesla and Elon Musk's claims about the ability of Tesla vehicles to drive autonomously.
