Trump to make official state visit to Britain in June

Donald Trump will hold talks with Prime Minister Theresa May in Downing Street during the visit

The White House press release did confirm that the President will hold a meeting with the UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, who initially mentioned inviting Mr Trump on a State Visit soon after his inauguration in January 2017, leading to controversy and a petition against the potential trip.

The Prime Minister and the president and his wife will travel to Normandy on June 6 for further Normandy commemorations, with Mrs May attending a number of events including the inauguration of the British Normandy memorial in Ver-Sur-Mer. "President Barack Obama and Mrs Obama made a State Visit to the United Kingdom in May 2011", the palace wrote on Twitter.

The visit will take place June 3 to June 5. "All those that value peace and hope for a better world for the many must take to the streets and say clearly that Donald Trump is not welcome here".

The 2018 trip was marred by huge protests, which featured a huge balloon depicting the Republican leader as a crying baby wearing nothing but a nappy, and also Trump's own behaviour during the visit.

What makes the Trump visits unique is the scale of opposition.

Their first visit, in July 2018, was repeatedly delayed and finally downgraded from a state visit to a "working visit" after lawmakers threatened to walk out of any address he made to parliament and protesters threatened to disrupt any official activities.

In France, Trump will also meet with Macron, who has also been the target of some of Trump's criticism.

Another 10 people were confirmed dead in the town of Batticaloa , in the east of the country, where another church was targeted. Local media reported 25 people were also killed in an attack on an evangelical church in Batticaloa in Eastern Province.

When Trump in January a year ago said he had scrapped his visit to the British capital because he didn't want to open the new USA embassy, Khan suggested the real reason was because he wouldn't be welcome.

News of the visit has angered Trump's opponents, with Labour "s Emily Thornberry slamming Theresa May for "wasting taxpayers" money on all the pomp, ceremony and policing" of the visit.

Mr Trump had planned to visit Ireland last November but subsequently cancelled the trip without even informing the Irish Government. His last visit to the United Kingdom, in July 2018, was styled as a working visit. Mr Trump is not here for sightseeing and royal glad-handing.

Theresa May had extended the offer of a state visit to Mr Trump early in his presidency when she met the USA leader for the first time in the White House in January 2017.

Trump remains an unwelcome figure for many Britons over his hard-right views, including his campaign promise to ban Muslims from entering the US.

The most recent US President to come on a State Visit was Barack Obama and his wife Michelle in 2011.
