Ford says Justice Department has opened criminal inquiry into emissions issues

Justice Department opens criminal probe into Ford’s emissions certification

Specifically, Automotive News points to a recent filing from Ford with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ford said in February it had hired external experts to check its testing procedures after its employees raised concerns.

Ford could be the next auto maker to be caught up in the emissions scandals that have rocked the industry since Volkswagen's admission in 2015 that it cheated pollution tests.

In January, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV agreed to an $800 million settlement to resolve claims by the U.S. Justice Department and the state of California that it used illegal software to produce false results on diesel-emissions tests.

Ford said on Friday it is fully cooperating with all government agencies. This has now resulted in the Department of Justice opening a criminal investigation. Today's disclosure follows a positive first-quarter earnings report on Thursday - with Ford beating market expectations by showing a $1.1 billion net profit while in the midst of its massive global restructuring. On Friday, Ford said it had disclosed the potential problem to the California Air Resources Board around the same time.

The Blue Oval has also notified other state and federal agencies, suggesting more investigations may be forthcoming.

Since 2015, USA and California regulators have cracked down on automakers who cheat on emissions testing after Volkswagen's use of defeat devices became public knowledge.

Regulators have been cracking down on auto companies over emissions testing discrepancies and other vehicle manufacturers have had to respond to inaccurate fuel economy reporting in the past. The investigation is focused on Ford's emission certifications program, which is used to determine fuel-economy figures and emissions compliance.

Volkswagen paid a $4.3 billion penalty to the Justice Department in 2017 after it was caught using defeat devices to overstate the fuel efficiency of its diesel-powered models. In 2014, Ford lowered fuel economy ratings for six other models and offered compensation to customers.
