UK's fired defence secretary furiously denies Huawei leak

Gavin Williamson has been sacked as Defence Secretary

British Prime Minister Theresa May has fired her Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson over the leaking of a key decision related to the Chinese telecoms company Huawei from a National Security Council meeting.

In a letter to Sir Mark, Dame Margaret said: 'The committee notes your ongoing inquiry into the leak of the National Security Council's decision on the use of Huawei in the UK's 5G telecommunications network.

Last week, Williamson, May and other members of the National Security Council, or NCS, met to determine if Huawei should be allowed to participate in building Britain's 5G infrastructure.

The U.S. has made no bones about expressing its objections to Huawei taking up this role, telling the United Kingdom that such a move could jeopardise intelligence sharing between the two partners.

"No other, credible version of events to explain this leak has been identified", May added.

He was sacked yesterday after being accused of leaking top-secret Government discussions.

In his previous role as chief whip, Williamson kept a tarantula on his desk called Cronus.

The Pakistani said it would immediately enforce the sanctions, but also took aim at India. It said Pakistan remains committed to fully implementing the FATF Action Plan.

As this story was being written it emerged that Williamson's replacement is Penny Mordaunt MP, who, as well as having once been a defence minister, was also a commissioned officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.

But it seems only to have unleashed yet another political storm for the British prime minister, with members of her own party questioning her judgment and opponents demanding the police be called in. The Prime Minister said it uncovered "compelling evidence" that Mr Williamson was to blame and he had not fully cooperated with the inquiry as others had.

Before any formal announcement was made, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that the NCS had given Huawei the green light, triggering an investigation into how the information had got out.

Following the leak, Williamson last week put out a statement claiming he was not responsible.

Williamson became defense secretary in late 2017, after Michael Fallon left the role following allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women.

► The former Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson says he would be "absolutely exonerated" if there was a police investigation into whether he broke the Official Secrets Act.

The NSC, consisting of the PM and her seniormost cabinet colleagues, invites top officials from the armed forces and intelligence agencies to its weekly meetings from time to time.

The security services have continuously sought to downplay the risk of Chinese intelligence interference in its kit going forward, although they have highlighted serious issues with the quality of the engineering and coding, which could itself be exploited by spies.

Thirdly, then, should the police investigate whether Williamson was the real source?
