U.S. hikes tariffs leaving high uncertainty in place - Danske Bank

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump attend a welcoming ceremony Nov. 9 2017 in Beijing China. Trump and Jinping are close to finalizing a trade deal between their two nations

In the middle of them, the USA followed through on Trump's decision to raise tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods in retaliation for China attempting to reneg on earlier commitments to reform its economic policies.

On Thursday, National Retail Federation vice president David French told reporters that the business community is united against using tariffs as a negotiating tool. "They broke the deal", Trump asserted, adding, "so they're flying in, the vice premier ... is flying in - good man - but they broke the deal".

On Wednesday, he continued that line of attack, claiming the Chinese had pulled back from negotiations in hopes that they'll be able to negotiate with "one of the very weak Democrats and thereby continue to rip off the United States".

Beijing will impose "necessary countermeasures" if the increases take effect Friday as planned, the Commerce Ministry said.

China promised to respond in kind to new US tariffs that took effect Friday even as trade talks continued in Washington between Chinese trade representatives and their American counterparts.

In response to the latest round of tariffs, China's Ministry of Commerce said, "China deeply regrets that the USA has made a decision to increase the tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent on US$200 billion worth of China goods exported to the United States". It reappeared with minor edits about an hour later, along with a flurry of other posts about tariffs on Chinese goods.

While it's absolutely true that the U.S. imports far more from China than China does from the United States, numerous products China does import are technology-based.

Major indexes in Europe and Asia finished lower.

The hike comes in the midst of two days of talks between top USA and Chinese negotiators to try to rescue a faltering deal aimed at ending a 10-month trade war between the world's two largest economies. "China would greatly slow down, and we would automatically speed up!" "We thought we were on a good path of making progress and having a deal".

Despite optimism from officials in recent weeks that the talks were moving towards a deal, tensions reignited this week after Trump angrily accused China of trying to backpedal on its commitments.

"Pushing rates to 25% will prove extremely damaging to those companies, and the collateral damage will ripple around the globe".

Actually, the burden of tariffs falls on USA consumers and businesses that buy imports. "We have been saying on this for some time that we are concerned about it and that we are clear that nobody benefits from trade wars".

Though talks are set to resume Friday, some close observers said they were not hopeful for any meaningful breakthroughs.

"We should not hurt innocent people", Mr Liu told CCTV.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump sought to calm USA financial markets after he insisted it was still possible to reach a deal this week, even as he reiterated plans to raise tariffs on Chinese goods.

Imposing new tariffs on China as President Donald Trump has suggested would hurt USA businesses and keep companies like Ohio's Cleveland Whiskey from exporting their products to other countries and hiring more workers, business groups fighting the tariffs told reporters on Thursday.

"I think the Chinese in the end will want to keep negotiations going. And they'll see what they can do", he said.

The Yangshan container port in Shanghai. The 10% will go up to 25% on Friday. First, China has fewer target options because they ship a lot more to the United States than they allow the U.S. to export to China, but agriculture is one of those needs. Energy companies also fell with the price of oil, as benchmark USA crude dropped 0.7% to settle at $61.70 per barrel.
