Korea missile launch, says Trump

The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff had no other immediate details of Thursday's launch

North Korean missile launches over the past week have not affected Donald Trump's relationship with Kim Jong Un, the U.S. president said Friday, in a change of course after initially expressing his dissatisfaction.

North Korea's state media said that leader Kim Jong Un had overseen a rocket and tactical guided weapons test.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were fired from the north-eastern city of Kusong toward the eastern waters between 4:29 p.m. and 4:39 p.m.

"But one thing is clear - there's no doubt that it is a missile". "Both South and US militaries are analyzing the details of the projectile".

Still, the president - who favors negotiation with the North - was trying to leave room for diplomacy.

"Nobody's happy about it", he told reporters.

Alarmed by the prospect of inter-Korean dialogue losing steam, Unification Minister Kim Yeon-chul visited a joint liaison office in North Korea's border town of Kaesong on Tuesday, a move that a ministry official said was designed to "remind the North of the importance of the symbol of peace jointly created by the two Koreas".

Denuclearization talks between the United States and North Korea have stalled following the summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February.

"We have reached the point where we can no longer effectively plan, coordinate and conduct field operations in [North Korea] during this fiscal year, which ends on September 30, 2019", department spokesman Lt. Col. Kenneth Hoffman said Wednesday.

North Korea lashed out at the United States and South Korea this week, saying last weekend's launches were "regular and self-defensive".

Palestinians report Gaza truce with Israel as violence ebbs
Israel says the smaller military group Islamic Jihad fired the rockets, but it holds Hamas, which controls Gaza , responsible. The Islamic Jihad official said the new truce agreement was again based on Israel easing its blockade.

The latest tests were swiftly followed by USA test-launches of the intercontinental ballistic missile Minuteman III over the Pacific and the Trident II submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) off Florida. "But at this point no", Trump told Politico.

"Our focus is on the denuclearization".

The tests have increased tensions after the last U.S.

Signatories included the United States and South Korea, as well as nations in Asia, Latin America, Africa and Europe. "That mission is important, and the pressure campaign that the world has engaged in must continue".

It was seen as a surprising diplomatic outreach by Kim Jong Un - but another summit earlier this year between the North Korean leader and President Trump ended in failure, with the United States not believing that North Korea was offering enough disarmament steps to agree to the widespread sanctions relief the North wants. During the conversation, Trump had expressed support for the food aid plan. The sanctions have created economic difficulties for North Korea. John Barrasso said Thursday.

NPR reported that a missile tested over the weekend bore some similarity to Russia's Iskander missile.

An unarmed Trident II D5 missile launches from the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Rhode Island off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, May 9. It is known to have a range of up to 500 kilometers. They covered distances of 420 km (260 miles) and 270 km (168 miles) and reached an altitude of about 50 km (30 miles) before falling into the sea, they said. "(The most troubling thing) is that the missile could carry a nuclear warhead of up to 500 kilos".

Some analysts say the multiple tests show the missiles aren't only for political show.

"The South Korean missile shield was developed to cope with existing ballistic missiles, (including) Scud and No Dong".

The Pentagon said Thursday's launches consisted of multiple ballistic missiles that flew in excess of 300 km (185 miles) and landed in the ocean.
