Lucky Diners Got Served a $5760 Bottle of Wine by Mistake

LUCKY It's a nice restaurant anyway but a bonus £4,500 bottle of wine sweetens the deal

So when one steak house in Manchester, England, tweeted a "chin up" message to an employee who made a very costly mistake, social media responded in a big way.

"They ordered a second bottle and the manager tactfully suggested they order a different one, without letting them know what had happened", Beckett added.

Little did he think that he would receive one of the most expensive items on the list at the same price!

Hawksmoor Manchester said on Twitter it hoped the customer had enjoyed their evening after being given the pricey 2001 bottle of Chateau le Pin Pomerol. "One-off mistakes happen and we love you anyway", the resturant tweeted on Thursday.

Founder Will Beckett said the staff member who made the error was "brilliant" and said he saw no reason to criticise her for a "one-off mistake".

The restaraunt added further humor to the situation in another tweet, which features a picture of the two bottles of wine side by side.

Arrests, new curfews in Sri Lanka after anti-Muslim riots
Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera rejected allegations that police had stood by while the violence unfolded. A police source said police had fired tear gas to disperse mobs in some places in North Western Province.

The mix-up occurred after the customer ordered a £260 bottle of the 2001 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande on a busy Wednesday night.

The Guardian quoted the Hawksmoor manager explaining that "a member of staff picked up the wrong bottle, mistaking it for another Bordeaux of the same vintage".

On Cult Wines, a leading wine information website, the bottle is described thus: "A tremendous effort, this 500-case cuvée (one of Bordeaux's original garage operations) is better still in 2001 than it was in 2000".

The restaurant was described as very busy when the incident took place on Tuesday.

Not wanting to cause a fuss the staff member "gently steered the customers toward another bottle of wine and kept quiet", he said.

It was only afterwards that the restaurant's manager realised the mistake, the BBC reported.
