White House 2020 hopefuls turn to foreign policy, slam Trump on Iran

Iran dismisses possibility of conflict, says does not want war

Iran's foreign minister says the Islamic Republic is "not seeking war" at the end of his trip to China amid tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Trump also reacted to a ruling by a judge against a lawsuit challenge a House subpoena for his financial records. Trump tweeted, without specifying how Iran threatened the United States.

Tehran has allegedly placed missiles on boats in the Gulf, and USA investigators reportedly believe the country damaged four tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, claims Iran has denied. The US on Wednesday pulled non-emergency staff members from its embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad out of apparent concern about perceived threats from Iran, while Germany and the Netherlands suspended training missions in Iraq by forces that are part of the worldwide coalition to defeat ISIS.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif went out of his way in Beijing only a few days ago to assure the world that "there will be no war" between his country and the US.

On Saturday, a warning from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) relayed by U.S. diplomatic posts underlined increased risks in a region crucial to global air travel and where Lloyd's of London has warned of increasing risk to maritime shipping. Amid unspecified threats from Iran, Trump has stationed F-52 bombers at a military base in Qatar and evacuated non-essential personnel from Iraq.

In May 2018, Trump withdrew the United States from a multinational deal with Iran negotiated by the Obama administration that reduced economic sanctions on Tehran in exchange for scaling back its nuclear programme.

"They are setting the stage for a war with Iran that would prove to be far more costly, far more devastating and unsafe than anything that we saw in the Iraq war", Gabbard said.

Exxon Mobil, headquartered in Irving, Texas, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"I would say to the Iranians, do not underestimate the resolve on the USA side in the situation", British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt told reporters on Monday in Geneva.

Congressional leaders received a classified briefing on Iran from the White House Thursday following criticism that lawmakers have been kept out of the loop about recent military moves in the Middle East. "Never threaten the United States again!"

On Wednesday, Gabbard told ABC News that she believed actions coming from President Donald Trump and national security adviser John Bolton, "are dangerously escalating us closer and closer towards a devastating war with Iran".

Iranian officials and analysts have said the dispatch of carriers to the region are just a "psychological warfare" against Tehran.
