Fifth migrant child dies after detention by Border Patrol

Border Patrol agents providing food and drinks to migrants in an El Paso migrant family processing center

A 16-year-old migrant boy died while in the custody of the U.S. government in Texas on Monday, the third minor migrant death in less than a month, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the boy had been apprehended May 13 after crossing into the United States near Hidalgo, in the Rio Grande Valley.

Many Border Patrol stations are now staffed 24 hours a day with medical staff, and Border Patrol agents are transporting an average of almost 70 kids a day since December to the hospital.

A 2 1/2-year-old whose family was apprehended at the U.S. -Mexico border in El Paso in April died on May 14 after spending weeks in the hospital with pneumonia and a high fever.

According to court documents filed earlier this month, Agent Matthew Bowen sent a text message to a fellow agent in November of 2017 that described migrants as quote "mindless, murdering savages" who are "unworthy of being kindling for fire". He told medical staff he wasn't feeling well on Sunday, and was prescribed medicine after getting diagnosed with the flu. He was transferred from the Rio Grande Valley Sector's Central Processing Center to the Weslaco Border Patrol Station Sunday and due for placement with Health and Human Services Office of Refugee Resettlement. A CBP official said officers follow instructions from HHS in determining where and when to send apprehended kids.

"The men and women of U.S. Customs and Border Protection are saddened by the tragic loss of this young man and our condolences are with his family", said John Sanders, acting commissioner of Customs and Border Protection. However, the boy was found unresponsive by Monday morning during a welfare check at the Weslaco Station in Texas.

The suspect almost ran over 23-year-old Antolin Lopez Aguilar then lied about the incident in his report, according to Arizona Daily Star.

Palestinians say not consulted on Bahrain 'peace conference'
The US peace plan is expected to feature proposals for regional economic development that would include Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. Israel's finance minister, Moshe Kahlon, said through a spokesman on Sunday that he had yet to receive any invitation.

"Just to be talking about having standards for medical care, Jakelin did not have any attention paid to her in a proper medical way before boarding that bus", House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said during a townhall in January, blaming one of the girl's death on a lack of proper medical treatment.

Lawyers for Bowen are trying keep the messages away from a jury, arguing that those phrases are common among all Border Patrol agents.

After the deaths of two children ages 7 and 8 in December, the Department of Homeland Security ordered medical checks of all children in its custody and expanded medical screenings.

The Border Patrol has released photos of adults and children lying in small, military-style tents or on the grass and pavement outside of two of its stations.

Amnesty International said in a statement that Carlos' death "leads us to wonder how many deaths it will take for the administration to ensure the safety and security of children".

Officials say the increase in asylum seekers is straining their detention capacity at border entry points.
