No more notches: Oppo and Xiaomi reveal under-display cameras for phones

Xiaomi's Mi Mix 4 could also feature an in-display selfie camera

Now, Oppo today announced through a tweet that it's working on an under-display selfie camera. Once this becomes mainstream, we can say goodbye to notches, cutouts, and mechanized pop-ups.

When the display is off, you can clearly see a darker circle in the screen, which is obviously the camera.

The demo video shows a prototype with in-display camera inside a case with a curved screen.

U20 World Cup wrap
Danylo Sikan gave Ukraine a 30th-minute lead before Muhamed Tijani equalised for Nigeria from the penalty spot in the 51st minute. He is the striker who scored a hat-trick of hat-tricks for Norway against a hapless Honduras side at the u20 World Cup in Poland.

However, Oppo's not the only company working on under-display camera technology. Whether it's the iPhone X's notch, the Galaxy S10's hole-punch camera, or the OnePlus 7 Pro's pop-up camera, all these devices compromise around the same feature, the front camera that needs to be there, ready to take those selfies that so many people love. On another note, Twitter user IceUniverse has also leaked a teaser video showcasing a comparison between a dewdrop notched device against a Xiaomi smartphone that comes with an under display camera module similar to that of OPPO's implementation displayed above. Of course not. Within hours of Oppo laying its cards on the table, Xiaomi president Lin Bin was on Weibo showing the company's own under-screen camera. "But, no new technology jumps to perfection right away", he said in Weibo post. The two phones, however, came with a punch-hole camera on the display.

For the privacy-minded types out there, this technology will also enable people to hide cameras behind pretty much any screen, possibly in a way that's almost impossible to notice.

It remains to be seen whether Shen's concerns, regarding under-display cameras not yet being able to achieve the same results as conventional cameras, are limitations of the technology's first generation or limitations of the technology as a whole.
