Trump’s Mexico Deal Based on Agreement Reached Long Time Ago

US reaches signed agreement with Mexico, tariff plan suspended

The president had planned to impose a 5 percent tariff on goods imported from Mexico beginning June 10 if Mexico did not take sufficient steps to reduce the number of migrants attempting to illegally enter the United States, many of whom travel from Central American countries through Mexico.

"The President's threat to impose tariffs on Mexico is a unsafe mistake that will have significant consequences to our economy and negotiations with the United States-Canada-Mexico Agreement", said U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo).

Last week Trump announced that, starting from Monday, June 10, a five percent tariff would be applied to all goods from export-dependent Mexico, rising by five percentage points each month to a high of 25 percent, until United States demands on migrant controls were satisfied.

The president's remarks come after the two nations reached an agreement to help reduce the surge of illegal immigration on Friday.

President Trump announced on Friday that the United States and Mexico have signed an agreement that will prevent the tariffs from being implemented on Monday.

"The tariffs are going forward as of Monday".

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said in Washington that the National Guard deployment would start on Monday. USA border agents detained more than 132,000 people crossing from Mexico in May, the highest level since 2006.

Senator Joni Ernst, who represents the farming state of Iowa and had broken with Trump on the tariffs, said that her state was "breathing a sigh of relief" with the deal.

"Additionally, Mexico has reportedly agreed to a major overhaul of reasonable asylum protocols, which would require asylum applicants to seek permanent refuge in the first country they arrive in after fleeing their home countries", adds the article.

According to a joint declaration released by the State Department late on Friday, the USA said it would work to expand a programme that returns asylum-seekers who cross the southern border to Mexico while their claims are adjudicated. But the outcome prevents a trade war that experts from both countries had warned could have been an economic catastrophe on both sides of the border. He said Trump had complaints worth heeding, noting that some WTO rules made it hard to constrain Chinese trade practices that have caused frictions.

But Leticia Calderón Cheluis, a migration expert at the Mora Institute in Mexico City, said the agreement is essentially a series of compromises exclusively by Mexico, which she said committed to "a double clamp at both borders". Trump, though, moved earlier this year to cut USA foreign aid to those countries, a move even United States officials say is counterproductive. It was unclear, however, what - if anything - Mexico had changed. Even Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the President's use of tariffs on China, a fact conveniently skimmed over by most conservative outlets.

The Mexican government had pledged to deploy the National Guard nationwide with a focus on its southern border - a key part of Friday's agreement - during secret meetings in March between former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Mexican interior secretary Olga Sanchez in Miami, the officials told the Times. Trump threatened to keep raising import duties on Mexican goods up to 25% unless Mexico acted to stem what he has called an "invasion".

"I think they want to do something".

"The others have to find a way to stabilise the multilateral rules-based system", he said, "even if the U.S. want to kill it".
