YouTube says it will remove thousands of videos pushing far-right views

Vox journalist Carlos Maza in a You Tube video

YouTube on Thursday tightened its policies to combat hateful and supremacist content, as it resolved to protect the platform from being used to incite hatred, harassment, discrimination and violence.

While it has always banned hate content in general, the site has allowed some specific kinds of harmful videos - such as those promoting Nazi ideology or claiming 9/11 did not happen - to continue being hosted on the site. Interestingly, the development comes on a day when You-Tube declined to take action against a popular right-wing commentator in the United States who is accused of homophobic and racist harassment of a journalist.

YouTube, which is owned by Alphabet subsidiary Google and has been under pressure to ban more offensive content, said it will begin enforcing the updated policy today. "In 2017, we introduced a tougher stance towards videos with supremacist content, including limiting recommendations and features like comments and the ability to share the video", it said, adding that the step dramatically reduced views to these videos, on average 80 per cent.

YouTube is now facing heavy criticism revolving around how it enforces - or more accurately, how it doesn't enforce - its policies relating to hate speech and discrimination.

Dale went on to explain that for a video to violate YouTube's harassment policies, its goal must be to incite harassment against someone, threaten or humiliate someone, or reveal personal information about someone.

According to YouTube, accounts can be suspended for comments users publish on the site.

Videos or content promoting discrimination, racism as well as those denying well-documented violent events such as Holocaust or the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting will be eliminated by YouTube.

"My work is raw coverage of activism and extremism that's necessary for critical analysis of big issues, documentaries and news", Fischer, who had over 27,000 followers on YouTube on Thursday night, told ABC News.

Who is the teen sensation hoping to crush Ash Barty’s dream?
Apart from the 2008 final, which was a 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 blowout, all of the pair's meetings here have been competitive four-setters. The other semifinal is No. 26 Johanna Konta of Britain against unseeded 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic.

Happily, as Variety reports, YouTube chose to do something about Crowder's channel after all, demonetizing his channel and removing it from the YouTube Partner Program.

Looks like new YouTube rules have kicked off a new crackdown that goes beyond Steven Crowder. Although the move will help tremendously to diminish hate speech, Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt shared with Variety that the policy alone won't be enough to halt the spread of such content.

It's only Wednesday, but YouTube has been having a hell of a week.

YouTube also gave an update on the policies it piloted in the USA in January this year.

YouTube demonetized Steven Crowder after Vox personality Carlos Maza pestered them.

However, the company has chose to suspend Mr Crowder's ability to monetise from adverts due to "widespread harm to the YouTube community resulting from the ongoing pattern of egregious behaviour".

YouTube did not disclose the names of any groups or channels that may be banned.
