Former Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari arrested on corruption charges

The Islamabad High Court permitted NAB authorities to carry out the arrest of PPP leaders

In this context, NAB Islamabad has requested a local hospital for a team of doctors for Asif Zardari's medical checkup.

Former Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari was arrested from his residence in Islamabad today.

Former Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has been arrested on corruption charges and refused bail, claiming the move is politically motivated.

"This is political victimization", said Shazia Marri, a lawmaker from Zardari's party. A senior PPP official confirmed the arrest.

Subsequently, the court had allowed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to arrest both PPP leaders.

A two-member bench that had earlier reserved its verdict on their application announced the verbal order.

During the proceeding of the case, NAB furnished all record in the court, as per its order, pertaining to the fake accounts transactions.

Pakistani authorities a year ago discovered several accounts, registered in the names of poor people, that had been flooded with cash, then suddenly emptied.

Mr Zardari has previously spent time in jail on corruption charges, but was president from 2008 until 2013. In September, Pakistan's Supreme Court established a commission in September to investigate the case and found that at least $400m had passed through "thousands of false accounts". But he has continued to serve as co-chairman of the opposition PPP.

Khan's predecessor, Nawaz Sharif who was removed from office by the Supreme Court over corruption allegations, is now in prison in the eastern city of Lahore after being sentenced to seven years in a corruption case.
