Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been detained for questioning by French police over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

He was taken into custody in Nanterre, Paris, on Tuesday morning and detained at the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police.

The Parquet National Financier has been investigating the December 2010 decision to stage football's biggest tournament in the small but wealthy Gulf state since 2016.

Platini told the Associated Press in 2015 that he "might have told" American officials that he would vote for the USA bid.

The former France worldwide was initially handed a six-year ban for his breach of regulations, but subsequently had the suspension reduced to four years after a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The ban expires this October and he has previously suggested he intends to return to football politics.

The initial public offering of more than 5.6 million shares of Class A common stock was priced between $19 and $21 per share. Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Allen & Co and Bank of America Merrill Lynch are leading the 12-member underwriting team.

Platini was elected as the president of Uefa, Europe's footballing body, in 2007 and he served until 2015. Blatter has always denied any wrongdoing.

Sophie Dion, a former sports adviser to ex-French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was also detained, the judicial official told the Associated Press.

Qatar controversially won the rights to host the 2022 World Cup almost a decade ago. I understood that Sarkozy supported the candidature of Qatar.

Platini's communications team also said he was questioned over awarding France the 2016 European Championships. He won three straight Ballon d'Or titles as the best player in Europe while playing for Juventus from 1983-85.

Platini's lawyer, William Bourdon, said his client was innocent and that he was being questioned on "technical grounds".

Federation Internationale de Football Association told the AP that it is aware of Platini's arrest and is willing to cooperate with the investigations connected to the 2022 World Cup bid.
