United Nations says Ebola not yet a global emergency

UN panel stops short of declaring Ebola a global health emergency

DR Congo has been battling the epidemic for about a year now and an expert committee of the World Health Organization on Friday said Congo's Ebola outbreak was an "extraordinary event" of deep concern but does not yet merit being declared a global emergency.

According to the ministry of health senior publicist, Emmanuel Ainebyona says the WHO director general is expected to have a bilateral meeting with president Museveni later today on to discuss about Ebola.

It said: "The exportation of cases into Uganda is a reminder that, as long as this outbreak continues in DRC, there is a risk of spread to neighbouring countries, although the risk of spread to countries outside the region remains low".

He however says the area of Mabalako where the Ebola outbreak was first confirmed in August 2018 in DRC is still a hot bed of new infections while the areas of Butembo and Katwa have declined. They now include the 3-year-old brother of the child who died in Uganda after traveling from Beni, sparking the need for a reassessment from WHO and the International Health Regulations Emergency committee in Geneva.

The outbreak from the Democratic Republic of Congo has already spread to Uganda with deaths recorded so far. With the number of cases passing 1,000, it is now by far the country's largest-ever Ebola outbreak.

"The rapid surveillance and response team, which has been sent to examine the patient who is in stable condition, has confirmed that she does not fit the case definition of Ebola". Three members of the family who brought the virus into Uganda have died after attending the burial of an infected relative, a popular pastor, in Congo.

While improved communication flows can help public health authorities track diseases and spread messages to people about how to protect themselves, greater access to a vast range of information can make the public become more sceptical of authority and can spread misinformation, including about vaccines, Bausch said. "We had to first deal with the hard ones based on Adhiambo's history of travel", said Dr Shadrach Mutai, the county Health executive.

Travellers coming in from Uganda queue waiting to be screened for temperatures.

"But after the Ebola outbreak business has slowed down so much, we are not making money, we live in fear because of this disease", he added.

The government has intensified Ebola Screening for all travelers using the border points.

Ebola is a deadly viral disease that causes high fever, body aches, diarrhea and bleeding often killing victims within days.

Uganda has had multiple outbreaks of Ebola - considered one of the most lethal pathogens in existence - since 2000.

How bad is the situation in DRC?

Armed militiamen reportedly believe Ebola is a conspiracy against them and have repeatedly attacked health workers battling the epidemic. One case was detected in Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom, respectively.
