Qantas' Airbus A321XLR Order

Alpha jets from the French Air Force Patrouille de France fly during the inauguration the 53rd International Paris Air Show

As part of the deal, the low-priced carrier also agreed to upgrade a previous order for 10 A320neo jets to the A321neo, it said on Thursday.

Airbus will add an ultra-long range A321XLR to its best-selling family of single-aisle jets, allowing airlines to open new routes and sharpen competition on existing popular routes such as London-New York.

Mounir still expected the world's largest twin-engined plane to fly this year and to be delivered in 2020.

Neither American Airlines nor Airbus would disclose the financial terms of the deal, but American Airlines President Robert Isom says the XLR will initially cost the airline more than the A321neo.

The purchase agreement includes the conversion of 30 of American's existing A321neo slots to A321XLRs and incremental orders for an additional 20 A321XLRs.

Kevin McAllister, the CEO of Boeing's commercial aircraft, told reporters at the Paris Air Show that the firm was "very sorry for the loss of lives" in the Lion Air crash last October and the Ethiopian Airlines disaster in March, both involving Boeing's 737 Max aircraft.

In 2017, Frontier's owner, Indigo Partners, made history with the single-largest Airbus order ever made - a 430 aircraft order valued at $49.5 billion list price, of which Frontier will receive a total of 134 aircraft.

Jetstar operates an A320 narrowbody fleet, but Qantas uses the rival Boeing (NYSE:) 737.

Leasing giant GECAS is in talks to place an order for the newly launched Airbus, industry sources said, after a subdued start to Paris Airshow for aircraft orders.

Airbus launched a long-range version of its successful A321 jet with 226 orders and commitments in Paris, only to see its short-haul position among IAG brands eroded by the huge deal which shores up the embattled 737 MAX. In fact, Emirates airline still has to confirm its orders of Airbus A330neos and A350s, and Boeing 787-10s.

The shock announcement came midway through the exhibition and helped Boeing clear some of the gloom surrounding the 737 Max by instilling a measure of confidence in its future.

The A321XLR is expected to enter service in 2023. It is 30 percent more fuel efficient than jets now offered by competitors, according to Netherlands-based company, and can fly up to 4,700 miles.

The A321XLR jets, to be delivered from mid-2024, have a 4,700 nautical mile range that will allow Qantas or its low-priced arm Jetstar to perform longer-range flights in narrowbody jets.
