Trump Calls Off Iran Attacks At The Last Minute

The state news agency said the US drone had been shot down

The president says he wants negotiations, but Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has laid out a dozen US demands calling not just for stricter controls on Iran's nuclear program - the goal cited by Mr. Trump - but also the complete reversal of Iranian foreign policy.

Mr. Trump claimed on Twitter Friday he called off a planned US retaliatory strike against Iran at the last minute after being informed the mission could kill some 150 Iranians on the ground.

Iran admitted to having shot it down as it had allegedly violated Iranian air space.

It reinstated punishing sanctions following President Trump's decision to pull the US out of an worldwide agreement meant to limit Iran's nuclear program in exchange for relief from earlier sanctions.

The Trump administration planned retaliatory strikes against Iran, but abruptly called off the attacks, Fox News reported.

The downing of the USA drone - a huge, unmanned aircraft - over the Strait of Hormuz prompted accusations from the us and Iran about who was the aggressor.

"I find it hard to believe it was intentional, if you want to know the truth", President Trump said at the White House. Iran has denied this and suggested the US may have been behind the incidents in an attempt to stir unrest as the Japanese Prime Minister made a historic visit to Tehran. It was not immediately clear what those economic restrictions may be.

Iran though claimed the U.S. drone was in its territory and that it in fact it had issued two warnings to the Americans before shooting the spy plane down eight miles from its shores. The military official said Iran chose not to target the plane carrying people.

That volatile situation came to a head this week when Iran shot down a large U.S. surveillance drone.

Araghchi "reiterated that Iran does not seek a war and conflict in the Persian Gulf", but warned: "The Islamic Republic of Iran would not hesitate for a moment to decisively defend its territory against any aggression".

Iran said the USA drone violated its airspace, while the US called the missile fire "an unprovoked attack" in global airspace over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump met with congressional leaders - many of whom are leery of the perceived United States warmongering - at the White House on Thursday afternoon.

Trump accuses New York Times of a 'virtual act of treason'
The president, on June 15, disputed the claims laid out by The New York Times and accused them of being "desperate". It also comes after reports of offensive U.S. cyberattacks against Russian Federation during the mid-term election.

The FAA previously warned of a risk in the region, but Friday's warning threw into stark relief a danger that both the agency and analysts say is real 7after the shooting down of a Malaysian Airlines flight over Ukraine in 2014.

President Donald Trump speaks to reporters during a meeting with President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil in the Oval Office at the White House, in Washington, March 19, 2019.

Unfortunately, at least until Thursday, Mr. Trump appeared to have done very little thinking about where his Iran policy might lead him. According to reports, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor John Bolton, and CIA Director Gina Haspel were all in consensus to carry out the strike. The Trump official asked not to be named. The U.S. has insisted that it was over worldwide waters and called this an "unprovoked attack".

The U.S. ban does not apply to airlines from other countries, but OPSGROUP, which provides guidance to operators, said carriers globally would take it into consideration.

"In his message, Trump said he was against any war with Iran and wanted to talk to Tehran about various issues", one of the officials told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Cancellations by nervous passengers could result in lost income far beyond the flights that have been officially canceled or delayed.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump chose to launch a counterstrike against Iran in retaliation for Iran shooting down an American drone.

Etihad, based in Abu Dhabi, also said it would "change a number of the flight paths we operate".

A United spokesman said customers flying from Mumbai to Newark would be booked on alternative flights back to the United States.
