Is This The Nail In The Coffin For The Iranian Nuclear Deal?

Trump says Iran strikes would not have been 'proportionate'

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani speaks during the weekly cabinet meeting in Tehran, Iran.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday his administration was "moving forward" and that he will impose additional sanctions against Iran in an effort to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

The Iranians may instead decide to increase the use of proxy forces in Iraq and Yemen, or give additional financial or material support to Hezbollah across the Middle East, fuelling a much wider conflict.

The limit on its stockpile of enriched uranium was set under a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

"You can't have nuclear weapons", he said, adding "if you want to talk about it, good". But experts say the violation would not pose an immediate proliferation risk.

Rouhani said Iran has always been seeking negotiation and diplomacy but negotiation is possible only when there is no pressure.

"If they exceed the cap by just a few thousand kilograms, then it is insignificant", Brandeis University professor Gary Samore told The Wall Street Journal.

President Donald Trump speaks to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House Saturday before boarding Marine One for the trip to Camp David in Maryland.

Aside from his "cocked & loaded" rhetoric, a militarist malaprop that has provoked a wave of mockery on Twitter, Trump's claim that he was concerned about a disproportionate number of Iranian deaths is hardly credible.

In a series of tweets on Friday morning, Mr Trump confirmed his decision to call off air strikes on Iran.

A minister from Britain's Foreign Office will travel to Iran on Sunday for talks with senior Iranian government officials amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region, the department said Saturday.

Iran has denied any involvement in those incidents.

Announcing Dr Murrison's visit, the FCO said: "The UK has an ongoing diplomatic dialogue with Iran".

And EU foreign-policy chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc was focused on keeping the agreement in place.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the drone's downing was a "clear message" to the USA that Iran's borders were "our red line". "If the [UN nuclear watchdog] IAEA assessments and reports will change, we will assess the situation further".

But worries about a confrontation between Iran and the United States have mounted despite Mr Trump saying he has no appetite for war.

Last year, Trump withdrew the United States from the deal created to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief, and reinstated measures created to choke off Iranian oil sales and cripple its economy.

Is This The End Of The Nuclear Deal? However, these officials worry that, in return, Iran might attack Israeli interests via one of its proxies in the region.

Iran says the drone was shot down over its territory while Washington said it occurred in global airspace over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran will only be able to hijack the G20 meet if it undertakes major escalatory actions, which would nearly certainly force Mr Trump to skip the G20 meet.

Iranian authorities have said they've also lodged a complaint with the UN Security Council. "Regardless of any decision [US officials] make ... we will not allow any of Iran's borders to be violated", the foreign ministry spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, told Tasnim, a semi-official news agency.
