Buttigieg Struggles With Response To Police Brutality Outcry Back Home

1 Killed, Several Others Injured in Shooting Outside South Bend Bar

The heckler called Buttigieg a "traitor" during the live broadcast event, which was held exactly a week after a 54-year-old black man was shot and killed by a police officer in South Bend.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, a clearly emotional Buttigieg said anger and frustration over race relations in the city had been "hurled" at him.

During Sunday's town hall, he said he will also send a letter to the Department of Justice asking them to investigate the incident.

The white mayor has had a sometimes-tense relationship with the black community dating back to his first term in office, when he fired the city's first black police chief. "Put the people that care about the fact that you different than me ... make them the ones out there on the streets", a South Bend community member said. "So at the end of the day, I'm responsible".

Buttigieg has touted his leadership of South Bend on the presidential campaign trail.

Shouting repeatedly erupted during the town hall, which lasted for over an hour and a half, and Buttigieg was widely criticized for his demeanor and his seeming inability to handle the situation.

In a 1989 interview with Larry King , Trump told King, "Maybe hate is what we need if we're gonna get something done". While the ads did not name the teens directly, it was exceptionally clear they were in response to the case.

The Monday morning Fox News crew labeled Buttigieg "weak" and "overwhelmed" by the primarily black attendees at a South Bend town hall Sunday.

St. Joseph County Sheriff William Redman issued a statement Sunday saying the County Police Department assisted South Bend Police Department with reports of multiple shooting as well as a crowd of "100 upset and angry citizens" that traveled from Kelly's Pub to a local hospital, prompting a lockdown. "We know how smart you are, now let's see what you did".

"I acknowledge that we haven't done enough", he said.

Buttigieg appeared a week after the fatal shooting of a black man, Eric Logan, by a white police officer exposed longstanding accusations among many African Americans in South Bend that elements within the city's predominately white police force are racist.

Sgt. Ryan O'Neill had been responding to a call about a suspicious person going through vehicles when he spotted Logan leaning inside a auto, St. Joseph County Prosecutor Ken Cotter said.

Sonny Hostin, who went to college in South Bend, noted that Buttigieg "has a problem with the African-American community in South Bend which is 30% of the community".
