"With an aim at strengthening our forward corps this offseason, and the continued strength of our defensive group, we felt it was necessary to clear up salary-cap space this way", Nashville general manager David Poile said.

The Predators will receive defenseman Steven Santini, prospect Jeremy Davies, the No. 34 pick in this year's draft, and a 2020 second-round pick in exchange.

For the second time in three years, the big-personality defenceman and former Norris Trophy victor has been traded.

P.K. Subban, Patrick Marleau and J.T. Miller were on the move Saturday as teams tried to get into position to bring back their own players or add to their roster during free agency.

At that time, P.K. Subban and his $9-million cap hit became the most expensive player ever to be traded in the National Hockey League.

P.K. Subban is ready to dance with the Devils.

What makes Subban's trades all the more noteworthy is that neither the Canadiens nor the Predators retained any of his salary when shipping him out of town.

"But to all those Nashville fans out there, I just want to let you know in that locker room, you guys have an incredible group of players", Subban said in the video.

It was a busy weekend for the Devils, who selected center Jack Hughes with the No. 1 pick at the 2019 NHL Draft in Vancouver the day before they acquired Subban, who won the Norris Trophy given to the best defenseman in the NHL in 2013 and was a finalist for the award in 2015 and 2018.

"There'll be opportunities to work with team off the ice, the community and all those things", said Subban, who played for the Predators in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final, a six-game loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Subban, 30, has three yeas remaining on a contract that carries an average annual value of $9 million.
