Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo to Co-Host 2026 Winter Olympics

Italy's Milan and Cortina win vote to host 2026 Winter Olympics

"Hopefully it makes it more competitive over time for [the IOC]", said Jeff Robbins, CEO of the Utah Sports Commission and co-chair of the Salt Lake Olympic Exploratory Committee. It'll be the first time the Games will be held in Italy since Turin hosted in 2006. Before that, the country hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The Washington Post reports the two hyphenated options reflect a move away from saddling a single city with the hosting burden, especially in light of the massive price tag that accompanies the Games.

"Sweden deserves the Games - Norway has had them twice, so it would be fair for Sweden to have them", he said, adding, in a veiled jibe at Italy's economic slowdown, that his country was "economically and politically stable".

"Sweden stands ready to host the winter Games of 2026".

"We have budget problems in Italy but I think that this is something that everyone has", Italy Undersecretary of State Giancarlo Giorgetti said at an earlier news conference, citing the wealth of the Lombardy and Veneto provinces underwriting the games costs.

"We neither want, nor can present, a concept that involves major Government grants and guarantees - or change the legislation - for a sports competition", Stockholm Åre 2026 said in a statement after it become the seventh consecutive losing Swedish bid for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The forward admitted he could have continued if Scaloni had not replaced him with Angel Di Maria. The top two in each group and the two best to finish third advance.

A total of 82 International Olympic Committee members are reportedly likely to cast votes in the ballot to decide the host city, meaning a simple majority of 42 will be required to win. "It's a very important result, not only for me but the whole country".

According to the Washington Post, the International Olympic Committee has promised at least $925 million toward total expected costs for the games of $1.7 billion. "The Olympic Winter Games Milan-Cortina 2026 will feature iconic venues and attractive settings, combining the attractions of a modern European metropolis with a classic Alpine environment".

The IOC praised both candidates for projecting sports budgets "on average 20 per cent lower" than spending on the 2018 and 2022 Games.

Lofven was speaking after a meeting of the Stockholm bid delegation with IOC President Thomas Bach, less than 24 hours before the Olympic body is to elect the winning candidacy.

During the traditionally slick and emotional pleas to be awarded the games, Stockholm mayor Anna Konig Jerlmyr reminded voters of Sweden's most famous music act.
