Betsy Ross Is Canceled

Arizona Governor Our Economy is Doing Just Fine Without Nike and I'm Pulling Their Incentives to Come Here

"Nike has chosen not to release the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July as it featured an old version of the American flag", a Nike spokesperson said in statement to TIME.

United States sportswear manufacturer Nike canned the release of a new sneaker on Tuesday which featured a colonial-era version of the American flag.

The CNN senior political analyst used his New Day Reality Check segment to talk about how the athletics company reportedly ditched the shoes following complaints from former National Football League quarterback-turned-company endorser Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick reportedly reached out to Nike after photos emerged of the shoes, saying the design could be seen as offensive due to its association with an era of slavery.

The website goes on to say that the early design of the flag represents the unity of the 13 original American colonies in their fight against to the British during the Revolutionary War.

"Instead of celebrating American history the week of our nation's independence, Nike has apparently decided that Betsy Ross is unworthy, and has bowed to the current onslaught of political correctness and historical revisionism", Ducey wrote on his Twitter account.

Nike has faced tremendous backlash since the Wall Street Journal broke the story that the sportswear giant had made a decision to scrap the Betsy Ross sneakers at Kaepernick's request.

Nike pulls flag-themed shoe. The Grand Rapids NAACP said the Ross flag had appropriated by "the so-called "Patriot Movement" and other militia groups who are responding to America's increasing diversity with opposition and racial supremacy".

Now Nike is facing further criticism by customers offended by the decision to cancel the shoe's sale and by Kaepernick's alleged involvement. "Even if it means sacrificing everything".

"Yep, I own lots of @Nike I´ve been a life-long customer, since I was kid". Prior to the scandal, Nike was promised up to $1 million in incentives for its planned $185 million facilities to be built in Goodyear, Arizona.

Republicans such as Texas Senator Ted Cruz have announced a boycott in response to Nike's decision, while Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has announced the withdrawal of $2m in benefits awarded to the company for its opening of a manufacturing plant in the state.

"No more Nike sneakers for our family", she tweeted.
