Missing Aussie Student Alek Sigley Has Been Released From North Korea

Alek Sigley has been found safe and well

As he pushed his luggage through the global arrivals hall and flashed a "peace" sign to waiting reporters, he said he felt "great".

His blog posts focused on Pyongyang culture and included everything from the city's dining scene to North Korean app reviews.

His "release from detention" in North Korea and arrival in China was confirmed to the Australian parliament by Scott Morrison, the Australian prime minister, who extended his "deepest gratitude" to Sweden for its help in the case.

"We were advised that the DPRK have released him from detention and he has safely left the country and I can confirm that he has arrived safely", Morrison said, using the official name for North Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Foreign minister Marise Payne said Sigley's father had been informed.

Earthquake Rocks Los Angeles Area on Fourth of July
Jones said there was a better than 50-percent chance of a larger aftershock in the magnitude-5 area "sometime this afternoon". The largest natural disaster to precede it was the Northridge quake of 1994, which was a 6.6-magnitude natural disaster .

Mr Sigley said his son was not a "rash or silly man" and his lifelong curiosity to learn more about other cultures, influenced by his own mixed heritage, had led him to North Korea.

"He's grown up in a community in Perth that is wonderfully multicultural, he went to Rossmoyne High School which was a wonderfully multicultural experience".

He said his son was in good spirits and in the care of Australia's embassy in Beijing.

"Happy for the release of Australian citizen Alek Sigley today!" Sigley is said to be at the Australian consulate in Beijing.

Sigley has been pursuing a master's degree at Kim Il-sung University since a year ago, but has been out of contact since late May.

Australia has no diplomatic presence in North Korea and is presented there by the Swedish embassy. Some have been held prisoner for years on accusations of spying. "I'm very good", but did not respond to reporters' questions about what had happened in Pyongyang.

Sigley's friend and fellow student of North Korea, University of Technology Sydney academic Bronwyn Dalton, said she had recently spoken to Sigley's wife, who was thrilled by the news.
