Serena Williams to team up with Andy Murray in Wimbledon mixed doubles

Serena Williams of USA and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou walk on after a training session at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships in Wimbledon London on Friday

That rejection has now led to the formation of the ultimate Wimbledon super-couple as between them Williams and Murray have won 26 singles majors.

The deadline for entries to the mixed doubles is Wednesday and Murray left the tantalizing prospect of a "dream-team" lineup with American Williams hanging when asked on Monday whether he had got any closer to confirming his partner.

Murray, who also coached her two sons Andy and Jamie in their upcoming days, the partnership could do a world of good for the three-time Grand Slam champion who is not playing singles after undergoing a hip surgery. It's always hard to tell as you only have mixed doubles at the Grand Slams, so nobody really get a chance to specialise in it or play it a lot. That's something I've always respected about him.

However, the same can't be said for sister Venus Williams who was knocked out of the tournament yesterday by 15-year-old Cori Gauff. "If you guys really want [the mixed doubles pairing] then maybe I'll do it".

Andy Murray and Serena Williams each won a Wimbledon singles title in 2016.

Serena Williams is back at Wimbledon in an all-white minidress with cutouts (white being the traditional color for the tournament), a super-fashionable statement to match her win over Giulia Gatto-Monticone.

Speaking before the partnership was confirmed, Murray said he would relish a partnership with the former world No. 1.

Other female players volunteered their services, including Maria Sharapova.

"It's great, I'm just happy to be fit and healthy again and after what's happened in the past year or so, you don't know what's round the corner".

"I think right now I have to have every match count, like 10 matches, because I haven't had a ton of matches this year", Williams told reporters. "We'll see. I could use extra matches, though, so ... could be something", said the 37-year-old, whose season has been hindered by a knee injury.

She added: "Above all, he really stands out, he really speaks up about women's issues no matter what".

The Wimbledon debutante, competing in only her second Grand Slam main draw, then broke the wily veteran and an intriguing battle followed.

Kvitova, who won the grass-court Grand Slam in 2011 and 2014, beat Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-4, 6-2 on No. 3 Court. "I will know for sure (on Wednesday)".
