Netherlands to face U.S. in final

U.S. women’s national team defeats England in Women’s World Cup semifinal game

Netherlands defeated Sweden 1-0 in the semi-finals of the ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup on Wednesday (local time) to enter the finals of the tournament.

The only goal of the match was scored in the first half of extra time by Jackie Groenen.

It sent the Netherlands into its first Women's World Cup final, where the Dutch will face the United States on Sunday, back in the Stade de Lyon.

Just over eight minutes later, it was Netherlands' turn to come close as Miedema headed a corner, which Lindahl tipped up and off the crossbar.

Saturday's 2-0 victory over Italy in the quarter-finals has totally changed the mood with the result also securing the Dutch their first Olympic qualification.

Both teams felt the pressure knowing the victor would face the No. 1 ranked and undefeated US team on the field Sunday, July 7.

He helped the Dutch men's team expand soccer minds by establishing the concept of Total Football, whereby all outfield players are seamlessly interchangeable on the field, allowing them to switch positions without affecting the shape of the side.

Two years after the Dutch won their first major trophy - the European Championship - Groenen is already dreaming of a first world title in only their second attempt. The Netherlands, the reigning European champion, has lived on the edge, though, with three of its five wins coming by a goal.

OPEC makes deal to extend cuts on oil production until March 2020
Oil prices have come under renewed pressure in recent months from rising United States supplies and a slowing global economy. The OPEC cartel and its oil-producer nation allies opted in December to trim daily crude output by 1.2 million barrels.

Both sides are managed by women, Sarina Wiegman coaching the Dutch and Jill Ellis leading the U.S. Of the 24 teams competing at the World Cup, only nine were coached by women.

Although she started, the 26-year-old was unable to make her usual contribution and went off at a halftime but she said she had faith in her chances of recovery.

"Sweden is a good team, they are really organized, especially defending", Spitse said.

The priority for Martens now is recovering from an ongoing foot injury that forced her off at halftime.

The Manchester United midfielder smashed home a fine effort from 20 yards out to give the Netherlands the lead. "I really believe in the medical staff".

Netherlands are facing Sweden in the Women's World Cup semi final tonight.

Netherlands, leery of the Sweden strategy, were hesitant to push players forward in support of their strikers, leaving them alone to fend against the Swedish wall of defenders.

With their marching parades to the stadiums and their impressive repertoire of songs, the thousands of Netherlands Oranje fans in attendance in France have added much to this tournament.
