Will Trump's visit to North Korea lead to a nuclear deal?

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and its leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during a meeting at the Demilitarised Zone separating the two Koreas

Mr Kim said he was "surprised" by Mr Trump's request to meet, and called the US President's short walk over the demarcation line into North Korea "a very courageous and determined act".

Zhao Tong, a fellow at the Carnegie Nuclear Policy Programme at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Centre for Global Policy, said a resumption of working level talks between the United States and North Korea would be a positive move as the lack of such had been one of the reasons the Hanoi summit had failed.

What did North Korea say?

Pyongyang's delegation to the United Nations said on Wednesday that the USA was "obsessed on sanctions".

The collapse of the Hanoi summit was a major setback for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who, several sources said, was led to believe by hawkish aides like former general and spy master Kim Yong Chol that he was about to win sought-after sanctions relief in return for a promise to partially scrap nuclear facilities.

The letter reportedly asked all members to send expatriate North Korean workers home.

But in a quick shift in tone, Pyongyang's delegation to the United Nations on Wednesday said the USA continues to be "obsessed with sanctions".

Another South Korean senior diplomatic official on Thursday said the North's selection of its new negotiator in the discussions was brought up during the brief meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, but that he couldn't disclose who it was.

Kim Myong Gil, minister at North Korea's mission to the United Nations, leaves bound for North Korea with other North Korean officials after the second Economy and Energy Cooperation Working Group Meeting in South Korean territory at the truce village in Panmunjom, north of Seoul on August 8, 2007.

North Korea said in the statement that the U.S. had made "deliberate attempts" to "undermine the peaceful atmosphere that has been created on the Korean Peninsula in no easy way".

Just a day before that visit, the USA was involved in a joint letter calling for all United Nations member states to expel all North Korean workers.

"It is quite ridiculous" for the United States to continue to be "obsessed" with sanctions and its pressure campaign against the DPRK, "considering sanctions as a panacea for all problems", the North Korean U.N. mission said Wednesday.

"A lot of good things are happening, and there's been no nuclear testing", he said.

Nonetheless those talks ended with no deal, as they failed to agree on the toddle at which sanctions must peaceful be eased.

Since then the negotiations have stalled, though Kim and Trump have exchanged letters. We'll see what happens.

At the assembly on the DMZ on Sunday their exchanges were largely complimentary.
