Angela Merkel shaking: I'm well, she says, despite third incident

Angela Merkel

The German Chancellor was previously spotted struggling to hide her shaking as she welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Berlin during a long period of extremely hot weather across the continent.

But the temperature in Berlin today only reached a mild 18C.

"I'm fine", she told a news conference on Wednesday.

In case of emergency, Merkel would be replaced by Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who would carry out her duties until parliament elected a new leader.

"I am really fine..."

A source close to the government had said the cause of the repeat shaking was now psychological, with memories of the first incident provoking renewed trembling at events with similar settings.

But a second episode struck a week later at the end of June, just hours before she was due to board a plane for a G20 summit in Japan. Speaking to reporters about it, she said "there has been progress" and "there was no need to worry".

In the United States, portions of the results of the president's annual medical examination is traditionally made public, but in Germany, political leaders are generally expected to enjoy more privacy around their health.

German media have reacted with alarm to Mrs Merkel's health scare.

"I have already said that I am going through a phase of processing the recent military honours with President Zelenskiy", the chancellor said on Wednesday. She has a reputation for stamina garnered during years of late-night domestic and European negotiating marathons.

Earlier that same year, she fractured her pelvis while cross-country skiing in Switzerland and was ordered to cut back her schedule dramatically and stay in bed as much as possible for three weeks.

Merkel added that she is "very firmly convinced" that she is "entirely capable" of serving as chancellor, a position she's held since 2005.

"I believe that just as it happened one day, so it will disappear".

A spokeswoman for Merkel, Ulrike Demmer, declined to comment on whether there had been any other shaking episodes beyond the three publicly known ones.

On Wednesday, the chancellor gripped her hands as she tried to control her shaking, standing alongside Prime Minister Antti Rinne. She has already said this is going to be her last term in office.
