President Trump to issue executive order about citizenship question on 2020 census

Trump Renews Push for Citizenship Question, Despite Supreme Court Ruling

"We will hold this Admin accountable for continued obstruction & oppose efforts to undermine the census", Hoyer said in a Thursday tweet.

The American Civil Liberties Union's Dale Ho says the Trump administration's ongoing efforts are "unlawful".

After a week of uncertainty about his next move.

Whether or not the 2020 census will have a question about participants' citizenship remains to be seen.

"If they prefer not to embark on this next phase, then I thought it could make sense to change", Barr said.

President Donald Trump abandoned his controversial bid to demand citizenship details from all respondents in next year's census Thursday, instead directing federal agencies to try to compile the information using existing databases. At the center of that case is an email exchange between the late Republican consultant Thomas Hofeller and a longtime Census Bureau official. The announcement, he said, will be focused on the census and citizenship.

"We're aiming to count everyone", he said.

He urged Barr and Ross to comply with the subpoenas so Congress can avoid a contempt vote.

Trump is insistent that the question be added to the census despite the legal challenges. "I felt the Supreme Court decision was wrong, but it also made clear that the question was a perfectly legal question to ask, but the record had to be clarified", Barr said in an interview.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross had said he was adding the citizenship question in response to a request from the DOJ for better citizenship data to assist in its enforcement of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. White House and Justice Department officials spent the Independence Day holiday considering ways to include the question.

Stop picking on me, says Konta after Wimbledon exit
Halep won the French Open past year and was world No.1 as recently as January before being eclipsed by Naomi Osaka and then Barty. It did not come quite as quickly as hoped, as two match points came and went in a flurry of deuces and a break back by Kvitova.

The Census Bureau has since begun printing the questionnaires without the inquiry about US citizenship.

It's unclear what new rationale for asking the question the administration might include in a presidential memorandum.

"The Supreme Court has spoken".

Even though it is not in session, the Supreme Court would be able to respond to any pressing litigation related to a citizenship question on the 2020 census.

Some justices, however, had public plans to travel overseas later this month.

Rubin also spoke to Joyce White Vance, a former federal prosecutor who now teaches law at the University of Alabama and is a legal analyst for MSNBC. Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court's liberals in the majority.

Despite the limited success Trump would have with his executive action, legal experts note that his defiance of the courts is concerning.

A federal judge has blocked the Department of Justice's attempt to swap its lawyers as it works on getting the citizenship question on the 2020 census.

DOJ lawyers have cited a June 30 deadline for printing census forms. Furman has set a July 23 hearing on the request.

In a blow to the administration, two federal judges in NY and Maryland recently rejected the Justice Department's request to switch up its legal team in defending the administration in the census case.
