Wimbledon: Simona Halep tops Serena Williams for second Major title

Halep shattered Williams' latest quest for a record-equalling 24th grand slam singles title with a merciless 6-2 6-2 victory in Saturday's unexpectedly one-sided final.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic beat No. 23 Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; No. 2 Roger Federer beat No. 3 Rafael Nadal 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

But it was Halep's day, the Romanian needing just 56 minutes to race to victory, dropping to her knees when Williams' final forehand hit the net. Williams is moving well and is undoubtedly more confident than she was the last time we saw her compete, at the French Open in May. It was also Halep's first win in four matches against Williams in major tournaments, although the first three all went three sets.

"It's something very special and I will never forget this day because it was my mom's dream when I was about 10", Halep said.

This will be her 3rd Grand Slam final since coming back from maternity leave and she is yet to win one. Halep has been doing that for her entire career, which is how she has been able to play three finals on the most rally-friendly surface of them all. After her awesome win, the incredible athlete opened up on the court about how her mom had always dreamed of that moment.

Indeed the Halep fan who burst into song - waving a Romanian scarf from the 2015 Rugby World Cup - singing "We love you Simona, we do!" served to give her the boost to rattle Williams from the start.

While Halep fell to her knees to celebrate her win and kissed the trophy repeatedly, she seemed nearly as pleased to be wearing a little badge that meant she was now a member of the All England Club.

"I don't know", she said.

She knew the Royal box was watching and simply couldn't contain herself.

Kelly charged in decades-long sex trafficking scheme
In February, Kelly pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually assaulted three teenage girls and a fourth woman. Greenberg said a bail hearing will take place early next week and Kelly hopes to then be released from custody.

Tennis great Billie Jean King praised Halep on her dominant performance throughout the match.

"Just got to keep fighting", Williams said, "and just keep trying".

And Williams asserted that she was happy for her then-opponent, Kerber.

"It was a little bit like a deer in headlights for me. She's very kind, very nice", Halep added.

"When I did it, I did it for tennis", she said when she ascended to the No. 1 player in the WTA.

She snatched the opening game of the second set in an arduous affair, but was unable to handle the barrage of cleverly crafted angled shots on Halep's serve.

As well as all the records she's hunting, the ageless champion has the chance to follow Australian legends Court and Evonne Goolagong Cawley and become only the third mother in half a century of professional tennis to win Wimbledon.

"Actually sometimes the comments help me, whether they're good or bad". I definitely don't want to do three tournaments before a Grand Slam. "I just needed some matches".
