The Formula One world champion took advantage of a safety vehicle to jump ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, delighting the bumper 141,000-strong Silverstone crowd.

Hamilton holds a 31-point lead over second-placed Bottas in his F1 title defense after nine races, but the Finnish driver felt far more confident on Friday.

In that race Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen avoided a penalty for a late overtake on the Ferrari driver. "I just couldn't get the right feel".

"I'm not angry but disappointed as it was hard racing and Seb didn't do it on objective", Verstappen said.

"When you're racing with a team-mate, it's on a different level".

Bottas said his lap was not ideal: "It was not a flawless lap, but I doubt anyone did a flawless lap because it was super sensitive to a mistake here or there because of the tarmac and the wind". Emerging on top turned out to be Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton as he beat his teammate Valtteri Bottas to take another of win of the season.

"The tire life was ultimately much better than we had thought, so a one-stop would have been possible, but our simulations before the race had predicted a two-stop to be the fastest option".

The safety vehicle gave Hamilton the lead as a gift, but the indications were that Bottas would have found it hard to hold him off anyway, once he had committed to a two-stop.

"Well, it was my mistake", said Vettel, who climbed out of his auto at the end of the race and went to speak to Verstappen. "Valtteri definitely didn't expect it".

It was a better day for Red Bull teammate Pierre Gasly, who topped the timesheets in the first practice before dropping to fifth in the afternoon.

Real Humans Might Be Listening To Your Dumb Google Home Questions
How it's supposed to work: Google Home should only be activated when someone says the triggers "OK, Google" or "Hey, Google". But if it happens when you're having a conversation, then Google will have also heard a short except of your conversation.

"I'm sure everyone would have seen my data and been looking at how I saved the tyre, and tried to do the same, and I just did the opposite".

Hamilton had been at the wheel on Thursday when he gave the veteran team owner a "hot lap" of the Silverstone track in a Mercedes high-speed road auto, the pair disobeying instructions from Claire Williams, his daughter and deputy team chief, to do only one lap.

"Every now and then someone needs certain attention", said Hamilton of the remarks.

Announcing the deal, Chase Carey, chairman and CEO of Formula 1, said: 'We are really pleased to confirm that the British Grand Prix will stay on the FIA Formula 1 World Championship calendar for at least the next five years, with the event remaining at its long-standing home, Silverstone circuit.

"I think with that incident, I do not have any problems and it was very easy for me to move on".

"And at the time he was not catching me".

"At the time he was not catching me, which he should have been, but I was keeping the gap the same".

"He came out of the pits seven tenths inside my window, so I would have pitted seven-tenths ahead".

"Lewis does not make mistakes like that, and he's two-and-a-half years older than Seb for that matter", he added.
