Volvo recalls 70,000 cars in the United Kingdom over fire risk

The company says its own'investigations have identified that in very rare cases the plastic engine intake manifold may melt and deform

Volvo has recalled nearly 70,000 cars in the United Kingdom due to a fire risk caused by an engine fault.

"In the very worst case, there is a possibility that a localized engine bay fire may occur", it said.

Volvo said it is in the process of contacting all customers whose vehicles are affected to alert them to the issue.

"In a few cases, it has led to a auto fire", said Volvo press spokesperson Stefan Elfström.

Swedish carmaker Volvo is recalling more than a million vehicles worldwide because some of the components in the motor are at risk of melting, a spokesman says.

There have been no reports of injuries or accidents linked to the fault.

The cars being recalled were produced in 2014-2019 and have a two-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine, Volvo Cars said in a statement.

"But if you notice any unusual engine operation, like the engine management light being lit, engine interruption or lack of power, reach out to your Volvo retailer".

A second letter will be sent confirming when a solution to the problem is available and the next steps required to have models rectified. The manufacturers said it notified the relevant authorities about the issue "as soon as it was identified".

More than 69,000 cars in the United Kingdom are affected.

This comes at a hard time for the Chinese-owned vehicle manufacturer which, despite rising sales figures, reported a slump in profits on Thursday.

The recall involves a series of vehicles from model years 2014 through 2019, including the XC-90 and S-90.
