100 million applications targeted in Capital One bank data breach

Capital One announces data breach; about 100 million people affected

The bank says that credit card numbers or log-in information wasn't compromised, but the hacker was able to access 140,000 US social security numbers, 80,000 bank account numbers that were linked to credit cards, and 1 million Canadian social insurance numbers.

The Virginia-based bank announced that on July 19 it determined a hacker gained unauthorized access to its systems and obtained personal information of 100 million credit card applicants and customers in the United States and 6 million in Canada.

A million social insurance numbers assigned to Canadian Capital One customers were also compromised in the in the incident.

The largest category of data stolen was supplied by consumers and small businesses when they applied for credit cards from 2005 through early 2019, the bank said.

"While I am grateful that the perpetrator has been caught, I am deeply sorry for what has happened", he said. "I sincerely apologize for the understandable worry this incident must be causing and I am committed to making it right".

The U.S. Justice Department said Paige Thompson, a former Seattle technology company software engineer, was arrested on Monday on a criminal complaint charging computer fraud and abuse for hacking into Capital One Financial Corp.'s stored data. Thompson, 33, made her initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Seattle on Monday and was ordered detained pending a hearing on August 1, according to the statement.

Dallas Cowboys Leadership "Not Alarmed" by Ezekiel Elliott’s Absence
He also talked a little bit about the natural deadline that comes with the start of the regular season about six weeks away. In three seasons with the Cowboys, Elliott has rushed for over 4,000 yards (1,333 yards per season).

Capital One said it would inform affected customers. After fixing the vulnerability used in the breach, they provided information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation who arrested the suspected hacker.

Law enforcement officials were able to track Ms. Thompson down as the page she posted on contained her full name as part of its digital address, the complaint said.

She was ordered held in jail Monday pending a detention hearing later this week.

While Thompson used a VPN and The Onion Router (TOR) exit nodes to hide her activities on S3, she posted files related to the illegal data access on open source code repositories Github and Gitlab using accounts bearing her full name according to FBI investigators. If found guilty, Thompson faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. That breach involved the Social Security numbers and home addresses of almost 148 million Americans from Equifax's servers in a hack that ran from May to July in 2017.
