Trump says he'll put 10% tariffs on remaining China imports

Trump says he will impose new tariffs on $300 billion in Chinese imports starting next month, ending brief cease-fire in trade war

Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping later agreed to restart talks during the G-20 Summit in Japan in late June, with Trump agreeing to hold off on threatened tariffs on the remaining $300 billion value of annual Chinese imports.

Trump announced a first tranche of duties, of 25% on $200 billion of Chinese goods, in May. Markets, which had been up ahead of the news, tumbled with all three major equity indices closing down by around 1% and bond yields sinking.

US and Chinese trade representatives had just wrapped up two days of talks, described by both sides as "constructive". He also tweeted "we look forward to continuing our positive dialogue with China on a comprehensive Trade Deal, and feel that the future between our two countries will be a very bright one!"

On Wednesday, Trump warned China that it will get "a much tougher" trade deal if it keeps stalling the talks until the 2020 presidential election in the US. Beijing has retaliated with tariffs on $110 billion in American goods, including agricultural products, in a direct shot at Trump supporters in the US farm belt.

Sheriff: 2 dead, officer injured at Walmart in Mississippi
Southaven Police Chief Macon Moore issued a statement on the incident, saying "One of our officers was shot at this time". As of now, details are scant, but the Southhaven Police Department was expected to hold a press conference on Tuesday.

"Attention all Target & Wal-Mart shoppers. the price on the goods you buy ahead of the holidays are going up due to trade policy", tweeted Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at the consultancy RSM. "Many Americans continue to die", Trump said in a tweet.

In June, the United States raised tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent, with China retaliating by targeting 5,000 US-made products worth $60 billion. Instead, this will be viewed as a betrayal of the consensus reached with Xi - and that after, from China's perspective, several previous examples of Trump unexpectedly pulling the rug out from under negotiations even as talks seemed to be progressing.

American officials accused Beijing of reneging on core commitments they had previously made during the talks. Stocks had started the day up significantly as Wall Street traders grew optimistic about another rate cut from the Federal Reserve.

"There may be at various times issues and problems between China and the United States, but no matter how many problems, it is important for both sides to sit down and have face-to-face discussions", Wang said.
