Apple Software Locks iPhone Batteries to Prevent Independent Repair

There's a microcontroller from Texas Instruments onboard iPhone batteries that communicates health information to the phone.

iFixit also confirmed that the Service notice appears even if you use a genuine Apple battery, but not an authorized installation. An Apple patent application that surfaced in February also describes a flexible display device, with images that seemingly show a smartphone that folds in half from top to bottom.

It's due to the chip located on the battery itself.

According to fix specialists iFixit, the iPhones (XS, XR and XS Max) now show a "Service" message saying that the batteries need to be repaired, if they are not replaced by Apple. That service indicator typically means that your iPhone's battery needs to be replaced because it may be degrading.

Now, a "Service" indicator will pop-up, notifying the user that they should take their phone to a Genius Bar or authorized Apple fix service provider.

The only way to return this to normal is to get your battery replaced by one of Apple's chosen repairers. But Apple refuses to make this software available to anyone but themselves and Apple Authorised Service Providers.

Top British ministers in United States to 'fast-track' post-Brexit deal
Earlier in the day, Michael Gove accused the European Union of refusing to engage in negotiations on a new Brexit deal. The US is the UK's biggest individual trading partner, with around $64.4 billion of westward exports in 2018.

The various colors of newly released Apple iPhone XR are seen following the product launch event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California, U.S. September 12, 2018. "It would be a good investment for them; when else would you get a windfall like that?" The device will provide deeper access to the underlying software and operating system that will make it easier for vulnerabilities to be discovered.

There's profit to be made by Apple when replacing an iPhone battery out of warranty, so it's understandable the company wants to encourage owners to go through official channels. It's also perhaps not the best public relations move given that another Apple controversy involving performance throttling of iPhones with older batteries is quite fresh in its customers' memory.

This isn't the first time Apple has been in the news for their fix policies.

Apple has always been making repairs hard for people outside of the Apple ecosystem.

Apple is developing both a foldable iPhone and iPad, according to an investor note from UBS.
