Hero's welcome for deceased Vietnam War veteran

Remains of Vietnam War Pilot Flown Home by His Pilot Son; Airport Pays Silent Tribute

Proskow tweeted that the announcement about Knight's arrival was made over the intercom and that the gate agent had been overcome with emotion relaying the story to travelers.

Relatives watched along with airport and airline employees as the flag-draped casket was carried off the plane with military honors.

According to a Southwest spokesperson, Captain Knight learned that his father's remains were positively identified earlier this year, "which began the mission of returning Col. Knight to his home in North Texas".

Today the pilot of the plane bringing Capt. Knight back to Dallas is his son.

His remains landed at Dallas Love Field Airport on Thursday afternoon, the same airfield where he said goodbye to his 5-year-old son, Bryan, all those decades ago.

"When I first got the call, it was nearly surreal", Bryan Knight told Southwest Airlines.

Knight's son, Brian, was the pilot who flew the remains home to Dallas on Thursday.

RCMP to make ‘significant announcement’ in B.C. murders manhunt
Friends since childhood, the two men had told their parents they were headed to Yukon and Northwest Territories in search of work. A press release from the RCMP said they will make a "significant announcement" on the case at 2 p.m. local time (3 p.m.

The effort to find Knight and identify his remains started in 1991, and US and Laos investigators found a crash site and life support items three years later. He served as a clerk typist in the Philippines, Japan and Korea before attending Officer Candidate School in 1953 ... From there he flew combat missions until being shot down while attacking a target on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos.

A Southwest Airlines jet sits on the runway at Philadelphia International Airport in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 17, 2018.

Captain Knight said he recalls feeling as a child that he had a responsibility to keep hope alive, feeling that if he didn't, it might somehow mean he was responsible for the death of a loved one.

Jackson Proskow was at Love Field Airport in Dallas preparing to board a plane home to Washington D.C. after going to El Paso when the aircraft arrived. He became a fighter pilot, serving in Germany and France before returning home in 1963 to work as an instructor pilot. He was declared missing, and officially presumed dead in 1974.

Col. Knight will be buried on Saturday in Weatherford, Texas.

Knight's welcome home ceremony stands in contrast to the conditions of the U.S.'s fewer than 850,000 living Vietnam veterans, many of whom still suffer from the aftereffects of combat.

Unfortunately, not everyone in the airman's family was there to witness his voyage back to the U.S. According to his obituary, Col. Knight's wife, Patricia, died in 2008 and his own parents passed away just three years after his disappearance.
