ICE raided 7 Mississippi poultry plants after workers fought for their rights

ICE Agents Detain 680 Illegal Immigrants Working in Mississippi

The government confirmed that the sweep, which targeted food-processing plants, was the largest ever conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a single state.

And in April 2018, immigration authorities arrested almost 100 workers at a cattle slaughtering and processing plant near Morristown, Tennessee.

What happened to the children?

But despite our best efforts, we couldn't keep her from finding out what was happening in her country.

The mayor of Jackson is calling on churches in the city to provide safe havens for the immigrant community in light of federal raids on several MS processing plants.

Like many unsafe, demanding, and dirty low-wage industries, the meat industry in the United States relies heavily on immigrant labor, and immigration enforcement authorities have routinely carried out high-profile, mass arrests of workers in meat and poultry plants.

The arrests came as a result of administrative and criminal search warrants executed by special agents from Homeland Security Investigations, federal officials said. Raids were "racially neutral " Photo US immigration officials said hundreds of "removable aliens" were working at the plants.

In what officials touted as the largest single-state immigration enforcement sweep in USA history, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents rounded up almost 700 undocumented immigrants at seven food processing plants in MS on Wednesday. In addition to the arrests, agents seized company business records.

More than 600 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were also involved, surrounding building perimeters to prevent workers from escaping.

"It was a sad situation inside", said Domingo Candelaria, a legal resident and Koch worker who said authorities checked employees' identification documents. Her husband has three children from his previous marriage who Dianna has helped raise.

Officials say they took steps to ensure any children were properly cared for.

ICE officials previously said they could not provide details on the operation because investigations into the illegal workers and their employers are ongoing. "This is heart-wrenching. They are scared".

Koch Foods did not respond to telephone calls and emails seeking comment.

Weekend washout as Met Office issue yellow weather warning for thunderstorms
Met Office meteorologist, Sarah Kent, said: "On Wednesday night, there is still some thunder over Scotland, but throughout the night, any heavy showers should be dropping away for most".

The hardest, most risky aspects of chicken processing work, such as the cutting, cleaning, and packing in factories, is often done by undocumented immigrants.

"To those who use illegal aliens for a competitive advantage or to make a quick buck, we have something to say to you".

The city of Jackson, Mississippi came out strongly against the raids.

"Today, through the hard work of these men and women, we are once again becoming a nation of laws", he said. Cynthia was put into a third group, she said. "This burns an incredible amount of resources to apprehend people, few of whom pose any threat to the US".

It is believed that "all children were with at least one of their parents as of last night", they said. "They all cry for their parents to be released". There are videos of children left crying alone after their parents were arrested.

Many were speaking out against the raids including democratic presidential candidates.

But at that moment, all my wife knew to do was pull the auto over, promise her she'd be OK, explain that Trump wasn't coming to get her and tell her that her mom and dad would never let that happen.

Inflicting this level of trauma on children is not proportionate to a misdemeanor offense.

When asked how a federal agency could leave behind so many kids, ICE didn't have much to offer.

US immigration officials say raids at seven food processing plants in MS resulted in 680 arrests.

Christina Peralta, who said her daughter goes to school with the girl in the video, told CNN that after the girl finished school on Wednesday, some of her father's friends brought her to a community gym that had been housing children whose parents were detained.

The ACLU and immigrant's rights organizations were warning people to be prepared and to know your rights.

But bad timing aside, what really makes Wednesday stand out is not that there was a raid but that there were so many people grabbed at once. And they urged people to know their rights so they can speak up and fight back.
