Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony to Disclose Loot Box Odds by 2020

Publishers Will Soon Have to Disclose Odds for Loot Boxes Due to Agreement Between Sony Microsoft and Nintendo”

Top console makers will implement the new policy some time in 2020.

Many games, like Apex Legends seen above, already disclose loot box odds. This is not to mentions the huge profits that the companies themselves earn form them. On the mobile side, this is also something that Apple and Google also mandate for games on iOS and Android.

While it seems loot boxes are here to stay, some new practices are being added in to protect consumers. They will need to be included for a game to be published on the Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch consoles.

The additional publishers include firms such as Activision, Electronic Arts, Blizzard, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Take-Two Interactive and Warner Bros.

And the disclosure initiative is expected to be adopted no later than the end of 2020 by participating game wranglers.

House panel files suit to force McGahn testimony
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has so far resisted that step, saying she wants to wait to see what happens in court. House Democrats filed the lawsuit in federal District Court in DC, and a judge has not yet been assigned.

The ESA (Entertainment Software Association) in the United States revealed 3 major players in the video game industry is implementing the new policies.

"At Nintendo, ensuring that our customers can make informed choices when they play our games is very important".

That means Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft won't allow games on their consoles if they have what we now recognize as lootboxes: the mystery crates you purchase which can either give you rare items or common rubbish. While the ESA's Michael Warnecke disagree with the negative reception to loot boxes overall, moving forward, any new titles or updates adding loot boxes on the three platforms will require the disclosure of rarity rates of items. This announcement was part of a public workshop that discussed the issues in-game gambling presents and what can be done to improve the video game industry's approach to loot boxes.

Over the past year, lawmakers and regulators have raised concerns over loot boxes, especially if they target children. Sen. "Interactive Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast", reads the blog post.

Given that numerous big games released on consoles these days also come to PC too, that alone would likely benefit us. Loot boxes are one of the most notorious video game elements in recent memory, and one that's particularly received increased government scrutiny after Star Wars: Battlefront II made headlines in 2017.
