Southwest Pilot Flies Home Remains of Fallen Vietnam Veteran Father

Col. Knight's remains were flown back home by his son

The flight landed at Dallas Love Field. "It was the last time he would see his father alive", Proskow said Thursday.

Air Force Col. Roy A. Knight Jr.

Knight's family has waited since 1967 to say goodbye, and as Jackson Proskow reports, the fallen hero's arrival at Dallas Love Field Airport brought everyone to a standstill.

Knight, who now works as a pilot for Southwest Airlines, was 5 when his father left to serve in Vietnam, and months after his departure, his father went missing in action when his jet was shot down and burst into flames on May 19, 1967, according to CNN and the New York Times.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said Knight's remains were discovered earlier this year by a team investigating crash sites in northern Laos. In February, his remains were uncovered. He was listed as "missing in action", and promoted to colonel, before the designation was changed to "killed in action" in 1974.

"As we were walking back to the auto my mother was was just sobbing and that scared me", Knight said.

Mexico: Texas shooting 'act of terrorism' against Mexicans
The massacre on Saturday was one of at least three mass shootings to kill and maim residents across the USA in the past week. A top official with the Mexican government announced that the nation will sue the United States under global law.

Fifty-two years later, Bryan Knight, now a captain with Southwest Airlines, piloted the plane that flew his father's flag-draped casket back to Love Field.

"Incredible moment to watch".

"How many people would ever have the opportunity to do this", Knight said. "The entire airport fell silent", Mr Proskow wrote.

Captain Bryan Knight - now a pilot for Southwest Airlines - was not only there for the long-awaited return, but had the honor of flying his father home. In 1957, he was accepted for pilot training in Texas and after the program served as a fighter pilot in France and Germany.

Knight in May 1967 was with the 602nd Tactical Fighter Squadron and leading a strike mission in Laos when his plane was shot down. There are 1,587 US Defense Department personnel who are still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.

Services and full military honors will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holder's Chapel United Methodist Church in Weatherford, according to the obituary.
