More than 1,000 people marched without police approval in Hong Kong Island following an approved rally at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay, where people reiterated their demands for the government and criticized police violence against protesters.

Senior Chinese officials on Wednesday offered stern warnings to Hong Kong about China's ability to step in to handle protests that have rocked the city for over nine weeks.

Under the Basic Law, China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) maintains a military presence in Hong Kong which can step in and use force if it deems necessary.

"In the beginning they were quite peaceful, you could say comparable to the protests back in 2014", he said, referring to pro-democracy Umbrella Movement in the city.
