Pakistan dedicates Eid to Kashmir after India strips region of special status

A window of hope We were helpless spectators of our ruin — but all that will change now

Pakistan has condemned India's atrocious lockdown in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and the resultant curtailment of religious freedom of millions of Kashmiris on Eidul Azha.

Modi claims the move was necessary to free the region of "terrorism and separatism", but many fear it's a pretext to re-populate the Muslim majority region with Hindus.

A notification issued by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), dated 10 August 2019, reads, "In observance of solidarity with Kashmir... it is requested that No Special Programmes (already recorded or planned live) be aired as Eid celebrations as the same may hurt sentiments of not only our nation but also the Kashmiri brethren".

A senior official said Internet services will remain suspended in the Kashmir Valley but the landline phone services could be operationalised after August 15.

Furthermore, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, who is also president of the BJP, moved a bill to bifurcate the state into two union territories - one, Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and the other, Ladakh - to be directly ruled by New Delhi.

Jammu and Kashmir's police force posted tweets with video and photos of people "celebrating" Eid in a bid to depict normalcy, but later in the day police admitted to "a couple of minor localized incidents of law & order".

A hotel and conference hall on the shores of Srinagar's Dal Lake has been converted into an improvised detention center. "I expected him to speak in Parliament during the debate", the Governor said.

Protesters and militant separatists have demanded independence from India or a merger with Pakistan. We are not militants. The following day, Lone was transferred to the makeshift detention center on Dal Lake and has been held incommunicado ever since. "Many states have also been given special status under several sections of Article 371 of the Constitution". The government is "trying to silence every voice they think would be able to mobilize opinion on the ground".

She said the whole government, Pakistani nation and the media condemns this barbaric treatment to the innocent Kashmiris.

"Peace is prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir and life is returning to normalcy there". The streets were deserted, with authorities not allowing any large congregations to avoid anti-India protests. However, over 400 political leaders including former J&K chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been under arrest since the revocation of J&K's special status.

He said communication facilities would be restored in phases.

A spokeswoman for India's Home Ministry did not reply to requests for comment on the detentions or the whereabouts of Mufti and Abdullah.

The government labelled the Reuters report "completely fabricated and incorrect". However, the restrictions have been relaxed in some parts in the wake of Eid on Monday. "No untoward incident reported so far".

The statement said restrictions imposed in Jammu and Kashmir last week were eased from Saturday onwards in a calibrated manner, balancing the requirements of facilitating the public and preventing mischievous elements from creating trouble.

The couple say they haven't heard from their relatives in more than a week. Ishfaq Naseem in Srinagar and Tania Dutta in New Delhi contributed reporting.
