North Korea fires unidentified projectile and declares talks with the South "over"

Russian Seismologists Register Zero Jolts After Reported DPRK Missile Launches

The North has protested against joint U.S.

The president had previously said that he'd like to end the "war games" held with South Korea, citing their cost. "It's presumed they were short-range ballistic missiles, considering the flying distance, altitude, and speed, among other things, although detailed analysis is needed", an official at the JCS said.

"South Korea is poking around hoping to reap the benefits of future dialogue between the North and the United States but it will be a good idea to give up such foolishness", the unnamed spokesperson said.

It is the sixth time in little more than three weeks that Pyongyang has conducted a missile test.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had told President Donald Trump that the tests would stop when the joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States are brought to an end last week.

Pyongyang recently said nuclear talks would be "strictly" between the North and the United States, refusing to hold separate dialogue with the South, having accused Seoul of posing as a "meddlesome mediator" following the collapse of the Hanoi summit.

The harsh criticism was in response to the South Korean leader's Liberation Day speech, stressing that the momentum for nuclear dialogue is still alive.

The development mark the latest in tension that has surrounded annual U.S.

Iwaya went on to say that defense cooperation between Seoul and Tokyo and among Seoul, Tokyo and Washington are facing a critical time, and pledged Japan's cooperation with South Korea on key issues.

The committee is the North's government outfit tasked with managing relationship with the South.

The two Korea's are technically still at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended with a truce, rather than a peace treaty.

South Korea's presidential office said national security adviser Chung Eui-yong presided over an emergency National Security Council meeting and Moon was briefed on the launches.

Moon and Kim have met three times since April previous year, pledging peace and cooperation, but little progress has been made to improve dialogue and strengthen exchanges and cooperation.

In a statement, the North questioned the meaning of dialogue when "even at this moment, South Korea continues its joint military exercise and to speak of a peaceful economy or a peaceful regime".

The North's spokesman described Moon as an "impudent guy" who is "overcome with fright".

"His open talk about "dialogue" between the North and the South under such a situation raises a question as to whether he has proper thinking faculty", the spokesman said.

Moon and Kim held three summits a year ago and agreed to a series of inter-Korean initiatives, but the North has since largely ignored the South in what is seen as a bid to pressure Seoul to take its side in stalled nuclear talks with the United States.

By refusing to sit down with the South, the North is signalling that it prefers to deal directly with the United States.
